The world is waiting to see what the US does next as the crisis in Iraq deepens. America's most senior general Martin Dempsey says if IS is to be defeated, the military offensive will need to be broadened with attacks on militants in Syria as well as Iraq. So far more than 90 air strikes have been carried out across Iraq since 8 August. President Barack Obama has long resisted direct US military intervention in Syria, where IS is the strongest of several militant groups fighting both the Syrian government and US-backed rebels. But this week’s video showing the murder of American hostage James Foley has led to calls to revisit that policy. Washington Correspondent Kylie Morris is on Capitol Hill and I’ll also be talking live to the US State Department and Lieutenant General Sir Graeme Lamb - a former British special forces commander who helped US efforts against al-Qaeda in Iraq.
