Romney Wins Michigan Primary

Mitt Romney has narrowly won the Republican presidential primary in Michigan, deflecting a powerful challenge from Rick Santorum and boosting his hopes of becoming the Republican nominee.
Only weeks ago, Mr. Romney had viewed his home state of Michigan as a firewall against his rivals, an important battleground state where his background and his message would carry the day.
That changed dramatically in the wake of victories by Mr. Santorum in Colorado, Missouri and Minnesota earlier this month. Within days, Mr. Santorum surged to a double-digit lead in Michigan./New York Times

China paces to the Moon

Moscow (RIA Novosti) Feb 28, 2012 - China announces its next manned spaceflight to be launched next summer. What are the implications for 'senior space powers'? On February 21, Chinese space officials announced that the next manned Shenzhou-9 spacecraft will be launched between June and August this year. Its main task will be to dock with the orbiting Tiangong-1 space lab module, launched in September 2011.

100 years since the Titanic

On April 15, 2012 it will be exactly 100 years since the Titanic collided with an iceberg and sank. It is not necessary to tell you the whole story once again; others did this at length, even with a movie.
You should also know that there were Flemish passengers on board and some of them did not survive this disaster.

Jack Philips

As radio amateurs we pay special tribute to wireless operator Jack Philips who acquitted himself of his task until the very last gasp and continued broadcasting the distress signal “CQD” (predecessor of SOS) as long as he could. 704 people (including 7 Flemings) were rescued. 1504 people lost their life (including 14 Flemings). Jack Philips himself went down with the ship.
In the logbook of wireless operator Cottam of the ‘Carpatia’, which was in the area at that time, we read the following:
April 14, 1912:
23:20 PM – CQD SOS TITANIC – collided on iceberg
23:30 Carpatia changes direction
April 15, 1912:
00:10 Titanic calls CQD, transmitting power weakens
00:20 Titanic sends series of V’s, signals irregular
00:25 Calling Titanic, no answer
00:28 Titanic calls CQD, broken signals, stops suddenly
00:30 Repeated calling Titanic, no answer
01:25 Calling Titanic, flares fired, no answer.

To honor this brave wireless operator and to commemorate this disaster, V.R.A.vzw (Vlaamse RadioAmateurs, which means Flemish Radio Amateurs) will put special callsigns on the air from April 1, 2012 until April 30, 2012.:
OO100MGY by our section RACD in Deurne (Antwerp)
OR100MGY by our section KUST in Knokke-Heist
OT100MGY by our section PRAC in Londerzeel

During the weekend of Saturday April 14 until Sunday April 15, all three stations will be active during a marathon transmission, from Saturday 14:00 local time until Sunday 18:00 local time (UTC from 12:00 Saturday until 16:00 Sunday) Each of these stations has a special and unique QSL-card available. So, 3 (three) different qsl-cards can be acquired, one for each participating station.

THE RMS TITANIC RADIO PAGE

Titanic's radio callsign

Titanic was assigned the callsign MUC in January 1912. Some time after January, Titanic's callsign was changed to MGY - this was previously assigned to the US vessel Yale.

As the dominant marine radio company of the time, Marconi allocated their own callsigns, most of which began with the letter M - these basically identified a Marconi installation, regardless of its location or the country of registration of the vessel in which it was installed.

Callsign allocation was eventually standardised at the London radio conference of 1912 (post Titanic), with prefixes being allocated on an international basis. UK coast stations and ships thenceforth used the letters G or M as the first letter of their callsigns. US ships and stations used K, N and W, German stations and ships used D, Italians I, French F, etc.

Trials and commissioning

The Marconi equipment was delivered to the vessel in time for sea trials on April 2. Phillips and Bride spent the day completing the installation and adjusting the equipment. They exchanged test calls with coast stations at Malin Head (Nth coast of Ireland), callsign MH and Liverpool (actually known as "Seaforth"), callsign LV.

By this stage the "wireless" was in almost constant use, with sea trial reports flowing from Captain Smith to Bruce Ismay (Managing Director) at the company offices in Liverpool.

By April 3, the equipment was adjusted and working correctly - Phillips and Bride exchanged messages with coast stations at Teneriffe (2000 miles away) and even Port Said (more than 3000 miles distant).

Both Radio Officers left the ship at Southampton for a short period. Phillips signed back on articles on April 6 when he returned briefly to check the spare parts. Bride returned on board at 2330 on April 9.

Watch hours

Both men were up early on sailing day, April 10, conducting final testing of the equipment. They arranged watches by personal agreement: Phillips, the chief, took the 2000 - 0200 watch, whilst Bride was on duty between 0200 - 0800. There were no fixed watch hours during the day: the men relieved each other to suit mutual convenience, however a continuous watch was maintained.

Location of the radio room

The "Marconi room" was situated on the boat deck (ie: the same deck as the bridge), at the after end of the superstructure containing the bridge and officer's accommodation - it was about 40 feet aft from the bridge, connected via the corridor which ran down the port side of the officer's quarters.

The operating room was in the centre of the accommodation - it did not have an outside facing porthole. Natural light was provided via a skylight in the deckhead (ceiling).

The R/O's sleeping accommodation was in a separate room to starboard of the operating room - connected to the operating room by an interconnecting door. The R/O's shared the officer's toilet/washroom facilities across the corridor.

The Silent Room, containing the main transmitter, was immediately to port of the operating room.

The operating room was connected to the ship's 50 line telephone exchange. However, it appears that there was no direct telephone connection to the bridge.

This problem was rectified on Titanic's sister ships Olympic and Britanic after the disaster - a speaking tube was installed which connected the operating room to the bridge..

Passenger traffic

As the liner's departure preparations were completed, both R/O's prepared for the daily onslaught of passenger communications directed to and from "ADVISELUM", the wireless code word assigned to Titanic for passenger's personal traffic.

Passengers sent their telegrams at the inquiry office, on the starboard side of the forward first class entrance. The handwritten messages were paid for at the desk, at the rate of 12 shillings and sixpence for the first 10 words, and 9 pence per word thereafter (a substantial sum in 1912, although not for a first class passenger…).

Telegrams were sent to the radio room by pneumatic tube. At the end of the day, a balance was struck between the purser's clerk and the R/O's regarding the number of chargeable words sent.

Incoming passenger messages were received by hand by the duty R/O, and typed on a telegram form by the other R/O. Passenger traffic was sent from the radio room to the inquiry desk using the pneumatic tube.

Messages concerning navigation were delivered directly to the bridge. Similarly, messages for the Captain were delivered by the R/O's to the Captain's cabin, down the starboard passage of the officer's quarters.

In the 36 hours between leaving Southampton and the collision, the Titanic's R/O's received and sent 250 passenger telegrams.

Fluid Replacement

By Howard LeWine, M.D.
Brigham and Women's Hospital

The Growing Popularity of Long-Distance Running
Why Change the Fluid Recommendations?
How Our Bodies Maintain Fluid Balance
The anger of Drinking Too Much Water
The New Guidelines
Sport and athletic associations have stopped promoting the old mantra of "drink as much as possible." Instead, they have stressed the importance of proper fluid intake before, during and after exercise.
The Growing Popularity of Long-Distance Running
The first running of the New York Marathon took place in 1970; 55 people finished, while more than 36,500 finished the 2004 marathon. In 2002, 450,000 runners finished marathons in the United States. Similar increases have occurred for other long-duration events such as 100-mile bicycle races and triathlons.

As more people have entered the 26-plus-mile races, the degree of supervised training and fitness levels has diminished, as evidenced by an increase in the average time to finish from about 3½ hours to well over 4 hours. With 30 million adult runners in the United States and many millions more exercising regularly, organizations such as the American College of Sports Medicine and USA Track & Field realize the need for a clear message about proper hydration.

Why Change the Fluid Recommendations?
The impetus to change the guidelines comes from different sources. We now have a better understanding of exercise-related symptoms of weakness and light-headedness and an appreciation of the danger of drinking too much plain water.

Research done in the 1960s suggested that dehydration was the main reason for heat exhaustion and heat stroke. So the natural conclusion was that athletes should always drink as much as possible to avoid dehydration. More recent research has revealed that heat-related illness has much more to do with how quickly people produce heat, the efficiency of their cooling mechanisms, and how well the surrounding environment can absorb the body heat. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke occur when the speed of heat production outpaces the ability to lose heat. Hydration is only one factor that affects this balance.

In the past, most symptoms related to prolonged exercise, such as light-headedness, were immediately attributed to dehydration. Certainly dehydration can be the cause of feeling dizzy. However, a likely alternative reason for being light-headed is from standing still after a long run or bicycle ride. This causes blood to pool in the legs, decreasing blood pressure (called postural hypotension) and blood flow to the brain. Following any prolonged strenuous activity, you should continue to move your legs for several minutes until your heart rate has recovered. Another misconception is that drinking extra fluid enhances athletic performance. You need adequate intake of fluids and calories before and during prolonged exercise, but overdoing it can impair performance and potentially be dangerous.
How Our Bodies Maintain Fluid Balance
The amount of water and salt in our bodies is balanced by an intricate system of hormones regulated by the kidneys and nervous system. During exercise, we increase our heart rate and volume of blood pumped out of the heart with each beat. This is called cardiac output. With strenuous exercise, cardiac output can increase from 5 to 25 quarts per minute. Our bodies need a full tank of salt and water within our bloodstream to make this happen.

Meanwhile, as body temperature rises during exercise, we sweat to release the heat. Also, we breathe faster and harder which causes more loss of water. The body’s response to the fluid loss is to tell our kidneys to hold on to all of the fluid they can. One of the key hormones that makes this happen is called ADH, or anti-diuretic hormone. ADH levels rise in response to fluid loss by telling the kidneys not to excrete water. So the amount of water relative to salt content in the blood rises, lowering the concentration of sodium.

The Danger of Drinking Too Much Water
Some people, especially women, have an exaggerated ADH response with prolonged strenuous exercise, such as a marathon. By drinking too much water without salt or electrolytes, susceptible individuals can develop dangerously low sodium blood levels (severe hyponatremia).

Mild hyponatremia that quickly corrects itself is quite common with vigorous prolonged exercise and probably does not decrease exercise performance. Severe hyponatremia is fortunately very rare but can result in brain swelling and death.

The New Guidelines
Attention to proper hydration starts before you exercise. Drink 16 ounces of fluid over 15 to 30 minutes ending two hours prior to your planned exercise start time. If you have been eating normally with at least a little salt, then plain water is fine. If not, consider a sports drink or adding a pinch of salt and sugar to the water.

For moderate exercise lasting up to an hour, you can usually rely on thirst to drive your fluid intake. The exception is exercising outdoors in very hot or cold weather, when you should drink a little extra beyond thirst.

If you exercise regularly for longer than one hour at a time or plan to compete in a long-distance event, you should make a more accurate assessment of your personal fluid needs. A simple estimate can be made by measuring change in body weight. Empty your bladder and get on the scale in dry clothing. Exercise for one hour at your usual or expected pace. Measure the exact amount of water that you drink during the test hour. Empty your bladder again and dry off any excess sweat. Put on the same dry clothes you wore for the initial weight and get back on the scale.

The amount of fluid you need per hour of exercise equals the number of ounces you drank plus the difference in ending vs. starting weight. (One pound equals 16 ounces of fluid.)

After you finish competing or working out, pay attention to thirst and keep drinking until urine color returns to normal — usually a pale yellow.

Regarding the type of fluid to drink, sports drinks or homemade solutions with a little sugar and salt are not necessary unless you plan to exercise for more than a couple of hours. Some people, however, feel more energized using these drinks with even less strenuous workouts.

/Svenska Dagbladet

Citrus May Lower Risk of Stroke

From the net
NEWS REVIEW FROM HARVARD MEDICAL SCHOOL
A new study suggests that citrus fruits may help to reduce stroke risk. The research was based on information about diet collected for 69,622 women. They were part of the long-running Nurses' Health Study. In a 14-year period, 1,803 strokes occurred. Researchers compared citrus intake to stroke risk. Women who took in the most citrus fruits and juices had a 10% lower stroke risk than those who consumed none. Citrus is the main dietary source of compounds called flavanones. In the study, women who consumed the most flavanones in all kinds of foods had a 19% lower risk of stroke than those who ate none. Both reductions in risk were for the most common type of stroke, which is caused by a blood clot. Flavanones are part of a broader group of compounds called flavonoids. These substances are also found in tea, red wine, dark chocolate and many fruits and vegetables. Other research has linked flavon oids with lower stroke risk. The journal Stroke published the study February 23. HealthDay News, ABC News and MedPage Today wrote about it. /Aetna Inteli Health

Pulsars: The Universe's Gift to Physics

Pulsars, superdense neutron stars, are perhaps the most extraordinary physics laboratories in the Universe. Research on these extreme and exotic objects already has produced two Nobel Prizes. Pulsar researchers now are poised to learn otherwise-unavailable details of nuclear physics, to test General Relativity in conditions of extremely strong gravity, and to directly detect gravitational waves with a "telescope" nearly the size of our Galaxy.
Neutron stars are the remnants of massive stars that exploded as supernovae. They pack more than the mass of the Sun into a sphere no larger than a medium-sized city, making them the densest objects in the Universe, except for black holes, for which the concept of density is theoretically irrelevant. Pulsars are neutron stars that emit beams of radio waves outward from the poles of their magnetic fields. When their rotation spins a beam across the Earth, radio telescopes detect that as a "pulse" of radio waves.

By precisely measuring the timing of such pulses, astronomers can use pulsars for unique "experiments" at the frontiers of modern physics. Three scientists presented the results of such work, and the promise of future discoveries, at the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Pulsars are at the forefront of research on gravity. Albert Einstein published his theory of General Relativity in 1916, and his description of the nature of gravity has, so far, withstood numerous experimental tests. However, there are competing theories.
"Many of these alternate theories do just as good a job as General Relativity of predicting behavior within our Solar System. One area where they differ, though, is in the extremely dense environment of a neutron star," said Ingrid Stairs, of the University of British Columbia.
In some of the alternate theories, gravity's behavior should vary based on the internal structure of the neutron star.
"By carefully timing pulsar pulses, we can precisely measure the properties of the neutron stars. Several sets of observations have shown that pulsars' motions are not dependent on their structure, so General Relativity is safe so far," Stairs explained.
Recent research on pulsars in binary-star systems with other neutron stars, and, in one case, with another pulsar, offer the best tests yet of General Relativity in very strong gravity. The precision of such measurements is expected to get even better in the future, Stairs said.
Another prediction of General Relativity is that motions of masses in the Universe should cause disturbances of space-time in the form of gravitational waves. Such waves have yet to be directly detected, but study of pulsars in binary-star systems have given indirect evidence for their existence. That work won a Nobel Prize in 1993.
Now, astronomers are using pulsars throughout our Milky Way Galaxy as a giant scientific instrument to directly detect gravitational waves.
"Pulsars are such extremely precise timepieces that we can use them to detect gravitational waves in a frequency range to which no other experiment will be sensitive," said Benjamin Stappers, of the University of Manchester in the UK.
By carefully timing the pulses from pulsars widely scattered within our Galaxy, the astronomers hope to measure slight variations caused by the passage of the gravitational waves. The scientists hope such Pulsar Timing Arrays can detect gravitational waves caused by the motions of supermassive pairs of black holes in the early Universe, cosmic strings, and possibly from other exotic events in the first few seconds after the Big Bang.
"At the moment, we can only place limits on the existence of the very low-frequency waves we're seeking, but planned expansion and new telescopes will, we hope, result in a direct detection within the next decade," Stappers said.
With densities as much as several times greater than that in atomic nuclei, pulsars are unique laboratories for nuclear physics. Details of the physics of such dense objects are unknown.
"By measuring the masses of neutron stars, we can put constraints on their internal physics," said Scott Ransom of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory. "Just in the past three to four years, we've found several massive neutron stars that, because of their large masses, rule out some exotic proposals for what's going on at the centers of neutron stars," Ransom said.
The work is ongoing, and more measurements are needed. "Theorists are clever, so when we provide new data, they tweak their exotic models to fit what we've found," Ransom said.
Pulsars were discovered in 1967 and that discovery earned the Nobel Prize in 1974.

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory is a facility of the National Science Foundation operated under cooperative agreement by Associated Universities, Inc.

NRAO is the operator of the world's largest fully steerable radio telescope, the Green Bank Telescope, which stands near Green Bank, West Virginia. The observatory contains many other notable telescopes, among them the 140-foot (43 m) telescope that utilizes an equatorial mount uncommon for radio telescopes, three 85-foot (26 m) telescopes forming the Green Bank Interferometer, a 40-foot (12 m) telescope used by school groups and organizations for small scale research, a fixed radio 'horn' built to observe Cygnus X-1, a bunk house to facilitate these guests, as well as a reproduction of the original antenna built by Karl Jansky while he worked for Bell Labs to detect the interference that was discovered to be previously unknown natural radio waves emitted by the universe.
Green Bank is in the United States National Radio Quiet Zone, which is coordinated by NRAO for protection of the Green Bank site as well as the Sugar Grove, West Virginia monitoring site operated by the National Security Agency. The zone consists of a 13,000-square-mile (34,000 km2) piece of land where fixed transmitters must coordinate their emissions before a license is granted. The land was set aside by the Federal Communications Commission in 1958, as a radio quiet zone; the area closest to the telescope is free of fixed radio transmitters, and all other fixed radio transmitters including TV and radio towers inside the zone are required to transmit such that interference at the antennas is minimized by methods including limited power and using highly directional antennas. With the advent of wireless technology and microprocessors in everything from cameras to cars it is difficult to keep the sites free of radio interference. To aid in limiting outside interference, the area surrounding the Green Bank observatory was at one time planted with pines characterized by needles of a certain length as to 'block' electromagnetic interference at the wavelengths used by the observatory. At one point, the observatory faced the problem of North American flying squirrels tagged with US Fish & Wildlife Service telemetry transmitters. Electric fences and other radio wave emitters have caused great trouble for the astronomers in Green Bank.[
