Let’s set one thing straight right now: It’s a myth that you need a lot of gear for cycling. I blame this fallacy on the M.A.M.I.L.s (that’s middle-aged men in Lycra), and their endless obsession with carbon-fiber whirligigs and aerodynamic thingamabobs. You don’t need any of that stuff. Really. (Especially the Lycra.) And thanks to bike-share programs, in many cities you don’t even need to own a bike. But having your own bike is a lot of fun, and it allows you to dial everything in exactly how you like it. (My favorite is the apartment-friendly Brompton, which folds up in 30 seconds but rides as well as any other bike on the market.)

Germany Crashes Out of World Cup with Loss to South Korea
There’s a lot of trash in the ocean these days — remember the Great Pacific Garbage Patch? — and plenty of it, often plastics in various forms, ends up littering shorelines. Which item do you think is the most frequently found?
Straws and stirrers

Cigarette butts
Cigarette butts. Although most people may not think of cigarette butts as plastic products, the filter is normally made of plastic fibers. Over the past decade, more than 20 million cigarette butts have been collected across the world in an annual coastal cleanup program.
Nobody likes cigarette butts. They’re dirty, stinky and full of chemicals, some of them toxic. And they are especially unpleasant to barefoot beachgoers. But they are the most common plastic product found on beaches, according to data compiled by the Ocean Conservancy, an environmental advocacy organization.
Each fall, volunteers gather around the world for coastal trash cleaning. Most of the waste is picked up on beaches and along waterways, but divers and people on watercraft also take part.
The trash collectors log what they find, and the information is compiled into a global report, generally considered the most complete record of the types and amounts of plastic debris found in the environment.
Food wrappings, plastic lids and bottle caps, as well as foam takeout containers, are among the most frequently found items. But year after year, cigarette butts top the list in sheer numbers. Last year, the volunteers picked up more than 2.4 million of them, according to a report to be made public Wednesday.

En Moscú, la sorpresa fue la presencia del cantante Christian Nodal, quien le dio una serenata al equipo y le cantó “Las mañanitas” a Miguel Layún, quien cumplió años ayer.
Y el entrenador Juan Carlos Osorio rompió la seriedad que lo caracteriza, se unió al festejo y canto “Adiós amor” para seguir con el ambiente festivo que ha acompañado al tricolor desde su triunfo por 1-0 ante Alemania.
Jugadores como Guillermo Ochoa y Oribe Peralta se unieron al mini festejo y el delantero del América subió una foto a las redes sociales con el texto: “Qué bonito, que te lleven serenata”.
Todos estos detalles sólo reflejan la fuerza y el gran momento que se vive en el equipo y que esperan prolongarlo en su juego contra Suecia para avanzar a los octavos de final.

Millions of Mexican-Americans and Mexican immigrants are absolutely kvelling (O.K., that’s not Spanish) over the team’s success in soccer’s World Cup.
The team, known as El Tri, as in Mexico’s national “tricolor” of red, white and green, took care of the defending world champion Germany as well as South Korea before it plays Sweden Wednesday morning to try to advance to the second round. The star forward, Carlos Vela, is well known in the United States, as he has a day job playing for Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles Football Club. Other teammates also play in the M.L.S.
These notable immigrants are being cheered on in record numbers in the United States. The Miami-based network Telemundo, which has Spanish-language rights to the World Cup in the United States, reported that it scored 7.4 million viewers, on television and elsewhere, for Mexico’s upset of Germany on Sunday, which was three million more than watched on Fox, the English-language rights holder. Fox, too, scored record viewership, and the announcers for the Mexico-Germany game included Mariano Trujillo, a former Mexican national team member who easily switched to English to provide insights for his Anglo viewers.
Like all blended families, the relationship between the Mexican national team and its American supporters is complicated. Take, for instance, the fact that the team’s marketing and promotion is handled by Soccer United Marketing, which is a division of Major League Soccer. It’s strictly business. S.U.M. can maximize revenue and exposure for El Tri by booking it into venues such as AT&T Stadium in Dallas, where the team routinely sells out its 80,000 seats when it plays against other nations. The games are carried by ESPN, in English and Spanish. And yes, fans of El Tri love their Cowboys, too, one reason the N.F.L. plays games south of the border.
El Tri’s passionate American following has caused no small amount of consternation at U.S. Soccer over the years. The United States has sometimes been left feeling as if it were the away team in some American cities with large Mexican populations. The irritation level grew so much that U.S. Soccer began scheduling games against Mexico in Columbus, Ohio — in February — to try to cool the Mexican heat. And that strategy has worked, with the U.S. consistently beating Mexico with scores of 2-0, so that “dos a cero” became a rallying cry.
Until this year. The United States failed to qualify for the World Cup after a humiliating defeat in Trinidad and Tobago before 1,500 fans in the last qualifying game. Mexico, on the other hand, not only qualified but is playing beyond expectations.
The team’s success is registering in Mexico, of course — celebrations were recorded on seismology meters — but also in every Mexican-American community in the United States.
But it also demonstrates how Mexico, and Mexican-Americans, are deeply entwined in the fabric that is America. And part of that fabric is soccer, which is now America’s most popular sport by participation.
We owe some of that popularity to Mexico. That’s one reason the American soccer star Landon Donovan decided to throw his support to El Tri. To say Mr. Donovan was detested by Mexico’s fans in his national team days would be an understatement. To say he has financial interest in his support — he did a pro-Mexico commercial for Wells Fargo, a Mexican team sponsor — is a fair point. But Mr. Donovan also walked the talk.
He recently came out of retirement for a short stint with the Mexican league team Club León and moved his family there to embrace the culture. It was natural for him, and he was welcomed. He grew up playing with Mexican-Americans in California and speaks fluent Spanish. “I don’t believe in walls,” he said at the time.

Monday: Groups A and B
The group stage of the World Cup is almost over: All 32 teams have completed their second of three games of group play. Now is the time many serious fans start to do the math to determine what their teams must do to ensure a place in the knockout stage of the competition.
In the early games, Uruguay beat Russia, 3-0, topping Group A, and Saudi Arabia scored a late winner against Egypt in the group’s game between the eliminated teams. In the later matches, both games ended in a draw with Spain winning the group and Portugal also advancing.

Uruguay won the group with a 3-0 win over Russia. It will play the second-place team from Group B, Portugal.
Russia has exceeded expectations by clinching a berth in the next round, and scoring eight goals in the group stage. It will play Spain, the Group B winners.
Saudi Arabia was eliminated, but earned its first World Cup win since 1994 after beating Egypt, 2-1.
Egypt was eliminated but we’ll be talking about how Mohamed Salah was drawn into a political controversy during his team’s stay in Chechnya for the tournament.

Spain clinched advancement, and won the group over Portugal on a tiebreaker of goals scored. It will play Russia, the host team, in the round of 16.
Portugal advanced with a draw against Iran in its final game of group play and will face Uruguay next.

Morocco was eliminated before its final game, but it earned a point in its 2-2 draw with Spain.

France has clinched a spot in the next round and can win the group with a victory or draw against Denmark.

Australia is out if it loses to Peru or draws. If it wins and Denmark loses, it will almost certainly advance, although Denmark could still get through with a few odd score combinations, such as Denmark losing by one in a high-scoring game and Australia winning by one in a low-scoring affair.
Peru is out, but its fans have made the most of Peru’s first World Cup appearance since 1982.

Croatia has advanced. It will win the group unless it loses to Iceland and Nigeria beats Argentina, and the combined margin is five goals or more.
Nigeria advances with a win over Argentina. If it draws, Iceland could catch it with a big enough victory, say two or three goals for Iceland (the exact number depends on how many goals are scored in the Nigeria draw).
Argentina must defeat Nigeria. Even then, it could be knocked out if Iceland beats Croatia by the same margin or better.
Iceland must defeat Croatia, and hope for one of two results in the other game: Argentina winning against Nigeria, but not by a larger margin than Iceland’s win; or Nigeria drawing Argentina, as long as Iceland wins by two goals or more (again, the exact number depends on how many goals are scored in the draw between Nigeria and Argentina).

Switzerland advances with a win or draw against Costa Rica. If it loses, it would still get in if Brazil beats Serbia. If Brazil and Serbia draw in that scenario, Switzerland might sneak in if it loses by only one goal.
Serbia would advance with a win over Brazil. If it draws, it is out, unless Costa Rica beats Switzerland, preferably by two goals or more. If it loses, it is out.
Costa Rica is out.

Mexico has very nearly clinched its advancement. It just needs a win or draw against Sweden. If it loses, it would still advance if Germany doesn’t beat South Korea, or if Germany wins but finishes with a smaller goal differential.
Germany probably advances with a win over South Korea, but could still be out even then if Sweden wins and the scores fall just right: if Germany wins 1-0 and Sweden wins 2-1, for example. Germany would also advance with a draw if Mexico beats Sweden. If both matches end in draws, it would come down to which team, Germany or Sweden, scored more goals in their final group games, with Germany winning if the scores are equal. Germany could even advance if it loses in some scoring scenarios, as long as Mexico wins.
Sweden would advance if it wins and Germany does not. If both win, it will come down to the goal difference between Germany, Sweden and Mexico. If Sweden draws, it must hope Germany loses or draws scoring fewer goals. If Sweden loses, it could back in only if it loses by one goal in a higher scoring game, like 3-2, and South Korea beats Germany narrowly.
South Korea must beat Germany by two goals or, preferably, more. And it would also need Sweden to lose against Mexico.

Det finns många många fotbollsvänner i vårt land. En av dem är Erik Niva.
Först såg jag en förlust – sedan såg jag hur rasismen grep tag i den, vred sönder den, förvandlade den till ett vapen.
Det är allvar nu.
Det spelar ingen roll om vi vinner några VM-matcher ifall vi samtidigt förlorar själva fotbollen.
När Toni Kroos vred in den där bollen i bortre hörnet var det som att ljuset släcktes.
Det var en nattsvart känsla av både frustration och resignation, och där och då var det som att inget annat spelade någon roll.
Men fotbollen är framåtriktad till sin natur, på ett eller annat sätt kommer den alltid att erbjuda en möjlighet till. Det tog inte ens en timme innan vi räknat färdigt på olika tabellscenarier, och någorlunda kommit till tals med utgångsläget.
VM lever. Framåt mot Jekaterinenburg, mot Mexiko.
Men det var ju inte så enkelt. Det som hände under timmarna som följde på den där första besvikelsen påverkade mig på ett mycket djupare sätt. Att se hur lynchmobben gav sig på Jimmy Durmaz med facklor och högafflar gjorde mig djupt orolig och innerligt sorgsen.
Jag har aldrig levt i illusionen där planen är någon form av frikopplad frizon dit samhällets problem inte når – men i hela mitt yrkesliv har jag ändå utgått ifrån övertygelsen om fotbollen som positiv social kraft.
Vad är själva poängen med fotboll, vad har vi den till? Allra viktigast för mig har alltid varit att den förenat snarare än den har splittrat, att den har fört människor närmare varandra snarare än att slita oss isär.
Om det inte längre gäller? Då känner jag på fullaste allvar att resten kan kvitta, att ingenting annat spelar någon roll.
Lynchmobben ger ingen rättvis bild
Där är vi absolut inte ännu. En lynchmobb på nätet ger verkligen ingen rättvis bild av vad folk i Sverige faktiskt tycker – men den går inte heller att trivialisera och bagatellisera.
Vanliga fotbollskänslor är något annat, det här hade egentligen inget med någon rivalitet eller någon besvikelse att göra. Det här var ren, osminkad rasism i sin allra vidrigaste form, och det är inget vare sig en människa eller en nation bara ruskar av sig.
Det brukar heta att fotbollen är en spegling av samhället, men även om det såklart finns en kärna av sanning i det är det en rätt slapp och skev förenkling.
Fotbollen har sina egna kulturella särdrag.
Vad gäller vissa delar ligger vi efter samhället i övrigt – machonormen och sexismen – medan det finns annat som fungerar betydligt bättre på läktare och i omklädningsrum än det gör på gator och torg.
Själv hävdar jag att fotbollen har varit hela det svenska samhällets bäst fungerande integrationsverktyg de senaste 25 åren, och att de som vuxit upp inom en fotbollsmiljö näst intill blivit vaccinerade mot främlingsfientlighet.
Men nu då?
Det finns så väldigt många barn och unga idag som upplever att de inte har någon självklar plats i vårt samhälle, som känt sig bortsorterade innan de ens förstått vilka alternativen var.
Tänk att göra det med svårstavat namn
Väldigt många av dem har ändå hittat en plats på fotbollsplanen. På eftermiddagarna har de fyllt sina vattenflaskor, gått till sin träning och drömt sina drömmar.
Tänk att en dag få spela för landslaget! Att vara med i ett VM, kanske till och med möta världsmästarna! Och tänk att göra det med ett lite mer ovanligt, svårstavat efternamn på ryggen!
Vad säger vi till de kidsen idag?
Jag vet inte hur många västeuropeiska förorter jag varit i, där invandrarungdomarna mest bara ryckt ointresserat på axlarna när jag frågat om det franska eller det holländska eller det tyska landslaget.
Inte deras landslag. Inte deras land.
I Sverige har jag i stort sett aldrig mött den reaktionen. Oavsett vad förortsungdomarna haft att säga om politikerna eller polisen har de ändå hållit på landslaget, eftersom de någonstans ändå sett sig själva som en del av den svenska fotbollsrörelsen.
Men nu var det länge sedan folkhemslandslaget kollektivkrigade ner italienarna på San Siro. Nu har vi först haft några månader av överhettad representationsdebatt, och sedan en måstematch som mynnade ut i någon form av offentlig pöbelprygling.
Är det här vad vi ska ta med oss från VM? I så fall hade vi lika gärna kunnat strunta i hela grejen, för i så fall är vi på väg åt fel håll.
Hoppas stödet räcker
Det finns en enorm kraft i fotbollen. Starka krafter vill exploatera och manipulera den, och tappar vi kontrollen över den så kommer vi förlora så oerhört mycket mer än en match.
I en tid då tjugo organiserade nätrasister låter högre än hundratusen ideella ungdomsledare är det svårt att föreställa sig exakt hur motreaktionen ska se ut.
Jag ser såklart hur Jimmy Durmaz sociala medier fylls av kärlek, jag ser hur han stöttas av sina lagkamrater och jag kan bara hoppas att det räcker.
På onsdag spelar Sverige en avgörande VM-match mot Mexiko, och himlarna ska veta att det är en viktig match, att den här nationen skulle må bra av en positiv gemensam upplevelse.
Men samma eftermiddag kommer även hundratusentals svenska barn packa sina trunkar och knyta sina skor och gå till sina konstgräsplaner. Vissa av dem kommer att se annorlunda ut än sina lagkamrater, vissa kommer att prata annorlunda och vissa kommer att tänka annorlunda.
Om inte de känner sig välkomna så har vi ändå misslyckats.
Det är på allvar nu, det är avgörande tider.
