California gubernatorial election expected to make history

The gubernatorial election on Tuesday in California is set to make history, featuring the rivalry between a billionaire woman and a senior man with rich experience in politics, in face of huge deficit, higher unemployment and pullout of enterprises and other dilemmas.

The Republican nominee, Whitman, 54, would be the first woman to become governor of California if elected, while her Democratic rival, Jerry Brown, 72, who led the state from 1975 to 1983, would be its first governor to serve three nonconsecutive terms in California. He would also be the oldest candidate to win the election as governor in the state. /Peopl's Daily Online (China)
