NEJM "The Swedish Spinal Stenosis Study" (spinal stenosis = ryggradsförträngning)

Lumbar spinal stenosis has become the most common indication for spinal surgery, and studies have shown that surgical treatment in selected patients is more successful than conservative alternatives. The aim of the Swedish Spinal Stenosis Study was to investigate whether fusion surgery as an adjunct to decompression surgery resulted in better clinical outcomes at 2 years than decompression surgery alone. Inclusion criteria included patients with spinal stenosis at one or two adjacent lumbar vertebral levels, with or without degenerative spondylolisthesis.

"A BMI in the 50th to 74th percentiles, within the accepted normal range, during adolescence was associated with increased cardiovascular and all-cause mortality during 40 years of follow-up. Overweight and obesity were strongly associated with increased cardiovascular mortality in adulthood. (Funded by the Environment and Health Fund."
