By JENNA WORTHAM
Facebook, which is preparing for a public offering, has more than 800 million active users around the world. But some people, even on the younger end of the age spectrum, just refuse to participate.
"--- One of Facebook’s main selling points is that it builds closer ties among friends and colleagues. But some who steer clear of the site say it can have the opposite effect of making them feel more, not less, alienated.---"

Some readers comments ("Shunning Facebook, and Living to Tell About It")
- I signed up to Facebook in 2005, when only university students were allowed to sign up. The general public was excluded (ie: parents, family, etc). FB was sort of a private "gated community."FB in 2005 was a fun way to goof around with friends. I remember the outrage when the "Newsfeed" feature was introduced: users were offended that private information was being shared with other users without their consent. People demanded a Newsfeed "Opt-out" feature. FB protest groups were created. Nothing happened. Its almost 2012 and everyone is on: the novelty is gone. I don't need to see pictures of your broken arm, or that you rented Transformers on Nexflix. FB is a way of giving lonely people their "15 minutes of Fame" with millions of people who could care less.
- Facebook is pure slim. Try Google plus instead.
- "Fakebook" has always annoyed me. I knew immediately that it was a threat to security and privacy however, I didn't realize just how insidious it would be when it came to people just searching me out on a whim. True, it can be done regardless on the internet and it's fact that you can find out more about a person than they know about themselves in minutes but Facebook makes it even easier and with access to photos making it even more scary.I have kept a page up since the beginning of Facebook but have considered taking it down many times. As it is, I keep a minimum of information on it and to communicate with people I want to speak with, I text/phone/email them. The only thing I have found it truly great for is the contacts that come out of nowhere through the Facebook database of people not spoken with in 10 years. Good to hear people who have the same concerns about it I have always had.
- I don't have a Facebook account for one reason alone: I know my weaknesses. It's the same reason I don't maintain a blog or have any games installed on my laptop, not even solitaire. I'm far too compulsive. I know that if I had an account, I'd spend far too much time monitoring the latest posts from my friends when I really should be doing other things like working. Or sleeping.
- As it is, I already spend more time than I like to admit reading the NYTimes.
- After 8 years with facebook, I deleted my account last week. I am doing just fine and yes it is quite liberating.
- I quit Facebook earlier this year. Most liberating thing ever. EVER.
- I had a Facebook account with 20 friends. All of whom I knew and cared to talk to, I think socializing with that many people is healthy but I started to realize having such few friends isn't what the social site is meant for, so I deleted my account. I still talk to my 20 friends.
"Most liberating thing ever. EVER" Jag (Stig) tror mig förstå!
