So at the end of a tremendously turbulent week, the leaders of the world's most affluent nations appear to have failed to come up with any sort of agreement likely to resolve the eurozone crisis. There have been lots of hopeful words - in the closing communique from the G20 Cannes summit and the leaders' news conferences afterwards.
But the very demeanour of these powerful politicians is revealing. Tense, combative, frustrated - they claimed to have laid the groundwork for a future deal but investors seem to have little reason to be more confident today than they were yesterday.
