Fat-Zapping Drug Proves Not to Be Monkey Business

A potentially powerful weight-loss drug that strangles fat cells and may counteract the nation's crushing obesity problem has passed a crucial test in monkeys.
After just four weeks of being given an experimental drug at a Bastrop, Texas-area laboratory, rhesus monkeys lost an average of 11 percent of their body weight. Their waistlines also shrunk.
"We're incredibly pleased by the results," said Renata Pasqualini, a researcher at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center who is a co-leader in the drug's development.
The monkey tests are important because primates are considered a good model for humans, in which the drug could undergo testing during the next few years. /New York Times News Service
