Christie's Super-Sized Sale Brings In $231.4 Million

Christie's put 84 Impressionist and modern works of art on the auction block last night in New York and raked in $231.4 million, reports the Wall Street Journal. The successful sale hints that the art market may be thawing after a slack period during the recession. One European collector bid a record $28.6 million for Juan Gris's 1913 still life "Violin and Guitar." The largest piece sold at auction was Henry Matisse's towering bronze statue of a woman called "Back IV."

A New York dealer bought the 6-foot-tall piece for $48.8 million, over ten million more than its anticipated selling price.
The dealer engaged in ten minutes of furious bidding before
finally going home with the 6-foot woman.
