Despite its reputation as a leader of sustainability, huge swaths of old-growth forests are clear-cut in Sweden every year. The vast majority of Sweden’s forests are now plantations of pine or spruce. While pine trees easily reach 500 years of age, only a fraction are allowed to live past 120 years before they are harvested.
