The Toddler Who Survived, and the Cop Who Became Her Mom

        

A horrific crime shocked New York City 30 years ago. Ten people, including eight children, were killed in a railroad flat in Brooklyn. Only one little girl, Christina Rivera, a 13-month-old toddler, survived. The police found Christina crawling among the blood and bodies of the dead, including her own mother. The largest mass murder in the city in decades, it became known as the Palm Sunday Massacre.
Police Officer Joanne Jaffe was assigned to stay with Christina that night, a task that was the first link in a bond that grew stronger from the start. Today, Christina is the adoptive daughter of Ms. Jaffe, who has risen to become the Police Department’s highest-ranking female commander.
For the first time, mother and daughter tell their story publicly.
