Super Bowl hits new record; post-game comedies soar
Super Bowl XLVIII was a Seattle blowout, but the game drew a record audience anyway.
Preliminary Nielsen figures show an average of 111.5 million viewers tuned in to the Seahawks' 43-8 drubbing of the Denver Broncos on Sunday night. That's about three million more than last year's turnout for the Baltimore-San Francisco matchup, but only slightly higher than games in 2011 and 2012, both of which drew 111 million or more.
The halftime show featuring Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers also set a record with an average audience of 115.3 million, improving on Madonna's record in the 2012 game (114 million) and last year's Beyonce halftime extravaganza (110.8 million).
Nielsen also estimates that the game drew a record crowd to Twitter, with 5.6 million users sending 25.3 million tweets during the game.
Fox's post-game series didn't set any records for Super Bowl companion series, but both New Girl (25.8 million) and Brooklyn Nine-Nine (14.8 million) set their own series highs, more than doubling their previous bests, in special episodes that began at 10:23 ET/7:23 PT. Last year's post-game series, CBS' Elementary, claimed 20.9 million, but started much later, at 11:11 ET. The all-time record was set by NBC's Friends, which claimed 52.9 million for a 1996 episode.
