, a 1,000-ton tunnel boring machine, fights through the clay 40 meters (131 feet) below ground in London's East End on Nov. 6. Tunneling tradition dictates that boring machines be given names for good luck. Other tunnel boring machines used in the proejct have been named Victoria, Ada and Phyllis. The tunnel is part of Crossrail, a new rail line crossing London from west to east with a 42 kilometer (26 mile) tunnel. Crossrail is largest construction project currently underway in Europe. /Der Spiegel
