Machu Picchu, Closed for Two Months, Set To Reopen

Machu Picchu (Bilden), the well-known archaeological site, closed in January following heavy rain and landslides, crippling Peru's tourism industry. About 90 percent of all tourism money—approximately $1 million a day—in Peru is generated in the Cuzco region where Machu Picchu sits. "The damaged railway line linking the citadel to the rest of Peru was mended with an urgency rarely seen before," the BBC reported. "For all its other tourist attractions, Peru has had a tough lesson in just how central Machu Picchu is to its tourist industry." The 15th-century Inca ruin is the most visited site in all of Latin America, according to the BBCB, and half of Cuzco's population works directly in the tourism industry or in a job closely linked to it/BBC
