Microsoft to Deliver $250 Computers to Low-Income Families in 2012

Microsoft (News - Alert) and several hardware partners are teaming up to deliver brand new $250 computers to low-income families next year as part of a federal program to help close the broadband adoption gap, according to media reports.

The program, Connect to Compete, which was announced by the Federal Communications Commission, aims to expand the number of Americans with broadband Internet access. About 15 million American families will qualify.

Last month, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski (News - Alert) announced the program, which is an effort to address broadband adoption, digital literacy and the employment skills gap. Private companies and non-profits have joined to form Connect to Compete. The new organization, which will be housed at One Economy, will be a collaborative effort with other non-profits and industry partners, FCC (News - Alert) officials said.
