Going to the Galápagos Is Easier and Cheaper Than Ever. That Might Not Be a Good Thing.

Some conservationists and travel experts are worried about the environmental impact of a growing number of visitors on the fragile, otherworldly archipelago.

--- In 2017, 241,800 people visited the islands, according to the Observatorio de Turismo de Galápagos, up from 173,419 a decade earlier. Much of the growth — more than 90 percent from 2007 to 2016 — is from land-based tourism: visitors who fly into airports on the islands of Baltra and San Cristóbal, check into hotels and take à la carte tours that are considerably cheaper than the expensive cruises that traditionally are how most visitors have seen the islands. With round-trip flights from Quito costing as little as $400 or so, and hostel accommodations starting at $20 a night, the Galápagos Islands are no longer just for upscale travelers.---

Tips for Traveling Cheaply in Any City

If it’s an important meal, or a spot you really want to try, don’t feel guilty about spending money in a restaurant. If the food is great, never feel guilty. But if it’s just a quick bite while you’re exploring, don’t waste the time or money.
Grocery stores and markets around the world offer far cheaper food than any restaurant. If you stay at a hostel or Airbnb, most have kitchens and refrigerators, so you can store easily prepared meals or ingredients you buy while you’re out and about. Depending on where you’re headed, the street food might be exceptionally cheap and incredibly good. If street food isn’t your style, in many parts of the world, convenience stores like 7-Eleven have delicious fresh food, and corner stores offer cafeteria-style dinners for local-friendly prices.

Stay at a hostel.

Forget everything you think you know about hostels. Today’s hostels are clean, cheap, for all ages, and in many cases, gorgeous.

The local train or subway systems in nearly every major city have cards that offer discounted rates for people who ride frequently. If you’re in a city for more than a few days, these will likely save you a lot. Load the card with a bit of money, and each ride is cheaper than if you bought them individually. Plus, it feels pretty cool to slap down your card at a turnstile like a local.
Many local transit systems offer temporary visitor cards. Be wary, though, I’ve found these aren’t always cheaper than buying individual rides. Cities with reusable cards, like London’s Oyster, Tokyo’s Pasmo, and others, require a small deposit, which you can get refunded when you leave. Often they’ll give you the remaining balance too, though not always. I just keep mine. Maybe you’ll go back next year!
I always thought this was obvious, yet restaurants near tourist hot spots are always packed. They’re almost universally overpriced, with mediocre food. The worst pasta I’ve had in my life was adjacent to St Mark’s Square in Venice. Instead, walk a few blocks in any direction. You’re bound to find something cheaper and better.

Democratic norms erode within the United States

The past year brought further, faster erosion of America’s own democratic standards than at any other time in memory, damaging its international credibility as a champion of good governance and human rights.

The United States has experienced a series of setbacks in the conduct of elections and criminal justice over the past decade—under leadership from both major political parties—but in 2017 its core institutions were attacked by an administration that rejects established norms of ethical conduct across many fields of activity. President Trump himself has mingled the concerns of his business empire with his role as president, appointed family members to his senior staff, filled other high positions with lobbyists and representatives of special interests, and refused to abide by disclosure and transparency practices observed by his predecessors.

/Malin Ekman, SvD

Gigantic Cavity in Antarctica Glacier Is a Product of Rapid Melting, Study Finds

The Thwaites Glacier in western Antarctica is already responsible
for about 4 percent of the world’s rising sea levels, according to NASA.

The Thwaites Glacier on Antarctica’s western coast has long been considered one of the most unstable on the continent. Now, scientists are worried about the discovery of an enormous underwater cavity that will probably speed up the glacier’s decay.
The cavity is about two-thirds the area of Manhattan and nearly 1,000 feet tall, according to a study released Wednesday by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The hulking chamber is large enough to have contained about 14 billion tons of ice — most of which the researchers say melted in three years.
The Thwaites Glacier, which is about the size of Florida, holds enough ice that if it all melted, it would raise the world’s oceans by over two feet, a change that would threaten many coastal cities. Climate scientists tend to watch this glacier closely, usually alongside the nearby Pine Island Glacier, which is also flowing rapidly into the Amundsen Sea.
Rising sea levels, among the most obvious threats of global warming, are caused by the melting of ice sheets, as well as the thermal expansions of the ocean. A separate study released last week found that Antarctica was contributing more to rising sea levels than previously thought.

Emmenez-moi

Children Develop Better When You Let Them Be Bored, Psychologists Say

Children Develop Better When You Let Them Be Bored, Psychologists Say

Boredom in children is common and something that every parent, teacher and sane adult wants to avoid. We’ve all heard the old saying: “An idle mind is the devil’s workshop.” So we expend time, energy, and lots of cash trying to ensure that our child’s mind doesn’t become the devil’s place of business.
But research shows that constructive boredom in children is essential to their mental and emotional development. However, kids need the guidance of parents or other adults if their boredom is to be constructive and lead to creativity.
Researchers Karen Gasper and Brianna Middlewood, of Pennsylvania State University, found that constructively bored individuals seek out and engage in satisfying activities—much like happy people do. In an interview with Fast Company, Gasper says:
“Boredom operates similarly to feeling happy or excited. It results in you trying to approach something that, in this case, is more meaningful or interesting. It encourages people to explore because it signals that your current situation is lacking so it’s kind of a push to seek out something new.”

Benefits of boredom in children:

Boredom fosters creativity

Creative Kids
Researchers all agree that the number one-benefit of children experiencing periods of boredom is that it develops their innate ability to be creative.
Dr. Teresa Belton, visiting fellow at the University of East Anglia, focuses on the connection between boredom and imagination. She told the BBC that boredom is crucial for developing “internal stimulus,” which then allows true creativity.
Operating under the notion that children should be constantly active could hamper the development of their imagination.
The popular belief that boredom is bad and potentially detrimental is the result of numerous past studies which reported that people with “boredom proneness” lack excitement and are easily frustrated. But recent research finds that being bored promotes creative association and pushes one to find deeper meaning and satisfaction.
It’s also important to remember that there’s a big difference between a negatively numbed brain and a constructively bored mind. Constructive boredom stimulates creativity. Constructively bored kids eventually turn to a book, or build a fort, or pull out the paints (or the computer art program) and create.

Boredom helps develop a sense of identity

Child Identity
Psychologists and child development experts suggest that over-scheduling children is unnecessary and could ultimately keep kids from discovering what truly interests them. In an interview with Quatrz, child psychologist Lyn Fry said:
“Your role as a parent is to prepare children to take their place in society. Being an adult means occupying yourself and filling up your leisure time in a way that will make you happy. If parents spend all their time filling up their child’s spare time, then the child’s never going to learn to do this for themselves.”
Lack of things to do can spur kids to engage in and try activities they would not, under other circumstances, have experienced, such as learning a craft or to bake cakes or to engage in an interesting DIY project.
So the kids are complaining that they are bored and you don’t want to over-schedule them or fill their time with activities you’ve chosen; but you have the type of kids who shouldn’t be left completely to their own creative devices?
Here are some ways experts say can help you create a nurturing environment for constructively bored kids:
Child playing outside

1. Create a list of things to do

Sit down with your child and help them brainstorm a list of all the things they enjoy doing. These can be basic activities such as playing cards, reading a book, or going for a bicycle ride. They could also be more elaborate ideas such as cooking a fancy dinner, putting on a play, or practicing photography. When your child complains of boredom, have them look at the list and find something they would like to do. Just make sure you don’t pick for them.

2. Have designated play areas designed specifically for kids

When kids are in a play environment created for them, they are more likely to create their own games when they get bored. These areas could be inside or outdoors.

3. Periodically structure some unstructured time for kids

Unstructured or “free” time is a great way to ensure that you are building in time for children to entertain themselves and engage in activities that they choose.

4. Encourage outdoor play, especially in a nature setting

Research shows that when children play in natural play spaces, they’re far more likely to invent their own games than in more structured settings — a key factor in becoming self-directed and inventive both as children and later in life.

(x)  In 1615, Marie de Médicis, Queen of France, decides to build a large path surrounded by elms and lindens along the Seine, called the "Cours la Reine".
In 1670, Louis XVI asks to André Le Nôtre who is the landscape gardener of the Château de Versailles and the Tuileries Garden, to keep building these fields with paths and grass. This new scenery is called "La Grande allée du Roule" and will change its name over the years, "Royal Gate Avenue" (Avenue de la Grille Royale) in 1678, "Tuileries Palace Avenue" (Avenue du Palais des Tuileries) in 1680 and "Avenue des Champs-Élysées" in 1709.
The name "Champs-Élysées" was chosen according to the Greek myths which define the "Champs-Élysées" as an idyllic place in hell where heroes and virtuous people could rest in peace.

Welcome to the New Age of Nuclear Instability

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s announcement on Friday that the United States is suspending the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty should worry everyone. The I.N.F. is a landmark treaty and it has made the world a safe place. It was the first nuclear agreement to ever outlaw an entire class of weapons.

Each year, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) releases their annual Homeless Assessment Report. In 2016, they reported:
  • Nearly 550,000 people are homeless on any given night in the United States.
  • Two-thirds stay in emergency shelters or transitional housing, while one-third sleep in an unsheltered location on the street.
  • 35% of the homeless population are families with children.
  • 22% of the homeless are children under the age of 18.
  • 10% of the homeless are veterans.
  • Senior homelessness is on the rise, with the amount of homeless seniors expected to increase to 95,000 by 2050.
  • Just five states account for half of the homeless population: California (22%), New York (16%), Florida (6%), Texas (4%), and Washington (4%).
  • The city with the highest population of homeless people is New York City.

"Temperatures remained low, near record levels, in much of the Midwest on Thursday morning. The extreme cold has been linked to at least eight deaths.".

“It’s too cold to be outside right now,” said Tyrone Cooper, who is homeless and spent Wednesday night on the subway’s E train. “You can get sick and die out there.”
