Aaron Alexis |
A Texas man has been identified as at least one of the gunmen who massacred a dozen people at the Washington Navy Yard on Monday.
Aaron Alexis, a civilian contractor, apparently used the identification of a man who used to work at the base to get past security and once inside he began blasting away with a shotgun and an assault rifle, sources said.
Alexis, 34, of Fort Worth, was killed in a gun battle with police, the sources said.
The ID that Alexis allegedly used was found later by his body in Building 197, NBC News reported.
Alexis was no stranger to trouble or gunfire. In September 2010, he was arrested for allegedly discharging a firearm in the municipality, the Fort Worth Star Telegram reported.
It wasn’t clear if Alexis was ever formally charged in the case.
Earlier, police said they were looking for two other potential “shooters,” but they have now ruled out one of the possible suspects, sources said.
The other, a black man in his 50’s with graying sideburns and wearing an olive drab military-style outfit, is still being sought.
“We are continuing to look for him,” said Washington D.C. mayor Vincent Gray. “We have no known motive at this stage.”
Gray added that they have no reason to believe it was an act of terrorism, but he also would not rule it out.
