Hal David (right), the renowned pop music lyricist whose prolific collaboration with composer Burt Bacharach produced a wealth of enduringly memorable hits in the 1960s and early '70s, including "Walk On By," "What the World Needs Now Is Love" (den känner vi alla igen) and "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head," died today at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He was 91."Hal David, One of the greatest"
Läsarkommentar från en N Y Times-läsare i NYC: "Can't believe this day has finally come, after all the years that Hal David's lyrics touched my life and millions of other people. Thank you for a lifetime of great songs, especially three about love: Alfie, What the World Needs Now Is Love, and The Look of Love, and three about the loss of love: I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself, A House Is Not a Home, and One Less Bell to Answer."
"Alfie" would not become a Top 15 hit in the US until the summer of 1967 when Dionne Warwick, the most prolific interpreter of Bacharach/David compositions and the composers' original choice to cut the song, took it to No.15 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 5 on the Billboard R & B Singles Chart"/Wikipedia
What's it all about, Alfie?
Is it just for the moment we live?
What's it all about when you sort it out, Alfie?
Are we meant to take more than we give
or are we meant to be kind?
And if only fools are kind, Alfie,
then I guess it's wise to be cruel.
And if life belongs only to the strong, Alfie,
what will you lend on an old golden rule?
As sure as I believe there's a heaven above, Alfie,
I know there's something much more,
something even non-believers can believe in.
I believe in love, Alfie.
Without true love we just exist, Alfie.
Until you find the love you've missed you're nothing, Alfie.
When you walk let your heart lead the way
and you'll find love any day, Alfie, Alfie.
