Millionaires Have a Senate Majority

Poor John Cornyn. The Republican senator from Texas saw his net worth increase 550 percent last year, to just $130,000—making him one of the poorest of his peers.
According to a Roll Call analysis of senators' financial data, the upper chamber is home to at least 54 millionaires (and another four who barely missed the seven-figure mark).
Sen. John Kerry, the Massachusetts Democrat, is worth the most, with an estimated net worth of $188.37 million. The senator who is reported as closest to the poorhouse, Sen. Herb Kohl, is actually one of its wealthiest members. The Wisconsin Democrat owns the Milwaukee Bucks, which, thanks to arcane Senate accounting rules, can only be considered worth $50 million, even though they're actually worth $254 million, but he gets to count liabilities related to the team, which are worth $115 million, so on paper Kohl is $4.6 million in the hole, even though he owns an NBA team. And we wonder why the U.S. struggles with fiscal policy.
