The Battle of Guadalcanal

What is the simple summary of the Battle of Guadalcanal?

Unfortunately of all WWII battles, Guadalcanal was 'not' a simple one. You won't see it covered in a tv program very often, because it won't fit in a hour of air time. It was in fact a series of battles, on land and major ones at sea lasting 6 + months.
In very brief summary....early in the War for the USA (1942) the USA had to 'get back in the fight'. They picked what was then called the 'Solomon Islands' (just north of Australia).
Guadalcanal was the central and biggest of the chain of islands, heavily garrisoned by the Japanese. The Americans invaded. They were not yet built up militarily for the War (like they would be soon later) and so fought a 'battle of attrition'....relying that they could risk (loose) more guys then the enemy. In a 'see saw' battle, the Americans ability to re supply, reinforce, and put in more troops, won the battle./Yahoo Answers

On Nov. 12, 1942, the World War II naval Battle of Guadalcanal began. The Americans eventually won a major victory over the Japanese.
