Efter branden i Västmanland kommer svedjenävan i tusentals sägs det
Svedjenävan förekommer huvudsakligen längs östkusten från Småland till Ångermanland, men är numera sällsynt (rödlistad som "nära hotad" (NT)) i Sverige eftersom det är en pyrofil art, det vill säga att den mer eller mindre är beroende av skogsbränder för sin fortlevnad. Deras frön, som finns i mineraljorden (dvs under markens humusskikt), behöver upphettas till 50-100 °C för att ta in vatten och gro (Granström och Schimmel 1993). Nu är vi så snabba på att släcka bränder att endast en liten areal skogsmark brinner årligen. För att denna och andra brandberoende arter ska överleva på sikt genomför skogsbolag, Länsstyrelser och andra markägare naturvårdsbränningar.
Plantor förekommer vanligen endast under ett par år efter en brand, innan andra mer konkurrenskraftiga växter tar över (Risberg och Granström 2014). Men deras frön kan överleva i markens fröbank under mycket lång tid, okänt hur länge, men grobara frön hittades i marken på en plats i Tyresta där man vet det inte brunnit på 200 år (Risberg och Granström 2012). Efter branden i Tyresta 1999 dök det upp tusentals plantor av både brand - och svedjenäva inom begränsade områden av det 450 hektar stora brandfältet (Johansson 2006). Nävorna finns i bördig marktyp, eftersom de kräver mycket näring för att blir stora och producera mycket frön under sin korta livstid. De kan bli över metern stora i diameter och producera över 4500 frön, men det är ovanligt (Risberg och Granström 2014).
Inte bara brand, utan även grävning eller annan påverkan på marken kan ibland aktivera de vilande fröna. Det beror på att även mekanisk skada på fröskalet kan göra att fröna tar in vatten och gror. Därför kan man ibland se svedjenävor på tex markberedda hyggen.
Svedjebruk har säkerligen gynnat förekomsten av arten.

The Oscar-winning actor and stand-up comedian was found dead in the Bay Area home he shared with his wife Susan Schneider on Monday afternoon (August 11). He was 63.

Cool and relatively moist, Swedish summers aren’t known for promoting wildfire. Fires occur in most years, but not on the scale or intensity of the blaze that raged through boreal forests in August 2014.
It’s not clear how it got started, but fast-growing fire has consumed Västmanland since July 31. In a week, the blaze grew to become the largest Sweden has seen in four decades. As of August 8, it had charred more than 150 square kilometers (60 square miles), killed one person, and forced thousands to evacuate their homes.
The Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 captured this natural-color image of the fire on August 4, 2014. Multiple smoke plumes rise from the perimeter of the fire and blow northwest in the wind. Burned forest appears brown; unaffected forests are dark green; farmland is light green; and fallow fields are tan.
Hot and dry weather exacerbated the fire, stressing vegetation and priming it to burn. With a high-pressure system parked over Scandinavia, oppressive heat emerged across Sweden in July and August, bringing record or near-record temperatures to many towns and cities. In Sala, a city close to the fire, temperatures soared to 34.7°C (94.5°F) on August 5. Average temperatures are about 70°F (21°C) in early August.
Wildfires aren’t common or widespread in Sweden. According to a report published by the International Forest Fire News, only a few hundred hectares (100 hectares is equivalent to 1 square kilometer) generally burn during the nation’s wet summers, and a few thousand hectares burn during dry summers. That’s less than 0.02 percent of Sweden’s overall forest cover.

Construction of the highly anticipated Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) can begin now that the National Science Foundation (NSF) has finalized funding. To be located in Chile, LSST is a proposed 8-meter wide-field survey telescope that will image the entire visible sky approximately twice per week, providing an unprecedented amount of information while transforming the emerging discipline of data-enabled science.

har vi ingen aaaning om; forskarna i bakgrunden mumlar bara tycker vi.
Med andra ord får vi vad vi förtjänar.

Astronomers find stream of gas – 2.6 million light years long

Click for a full resolution imageThe stream of atomic hydrogen gas is the largest known, a million light years longer than a gas tail found in the Virgo Cluster by another Arecibo project a few years ago. Dr Rhys Taylor, a researcher at the Czech Academy of Sciences and lead author of the paper, said "This was totally unexpected. We frequently see gas streams in galaxy clusters, where there are lots of galaxies close together, but to find something this long and not in a cluster is unprecedented."It is not just the length of the stream that is surprising but also the amount of gas found in it. Roberto Rodriguez, a 2014 graduate from the University of Puerto Rico in Humacao who worked on the project as an undergraduate, explained "We normally find gas inside galaxies, but here half of the gas – 15 billion times the mass of the Sun – is in the bridge. That’s far more than in the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies combined!"
The team is still investigating the origin of the stream. One notion surmises that the large galaxy at one end of the stream passed close to the group of smaller galaxies at the other end in the past, and that the gas bridge was drawn out as they moved apart. A second notion suggests that the large galaxy plowed straight through the middle of the group, pushing gas out of it. The team plan to use computer simulations to find out which of these ideas can best match the shape of the bridge that is seen with the Arecibo Telescope.
The project involved three undergraduate researchers: Roberto Rodriguez and Clarissa Vazquez from UPR Humacao, and Hanna Herbst, now a graduate student at the University of Florida. Dr Robert Minchin, a staff astronomer at Arecibo Observatory and the principal investigator on the project, said "Student involvement is very important to us. We are proud to be inspiring the next generation of astronomers, and particularly proud of the involvement of Puerto Rican students."
The bridge was found in data taken between 2008 and 2011 for the Arecibo Galaxy Environment Survey (AGES), which is using the power of the Arecibo Telescope to survey a large area of sky with a high level of sensitivity.

Astronomers using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope for the first time have spotted a star system that later produced an unusual supernova explosion of a white dwarf, the stripped-down core of an ordinary star at the end of its life.
Examining archived Hubble images taken before the supernova, astronomers say they have detected the blue companion star of the white dwarf. The white dwarf slowly siphoned fuel from its companion, eventually igniting a runaway nuclear reaction in the dead star, and producing a weak supernova blast.
This particular supernova is classified as a Type Iax, a recently identified class of stellar explosion. These exploding stars are less energetic and fainter than Type Ia supernovae, which also originate from exploding white dwarfs in binary systems. Astronomers originally thought these weaker stellar blasts were unique Type Ia supernovae. So far, they have identified more than 30 of these mini-explosions, which occur at one-fifth the rate of Type Ia supernovae.
"Astronomers have been searching for decades for the progenitors of Type Ia's," said Saurabh Jha of Rutgers University in Piscataway, New Jersey. "Type Ia's are important because they're used to measure vast cosmic distances and the expansion of the universe. But we have very few constraints on how any white dwarf explodes. The similarities between Type Iax's and normal Type Ia's make understanding Type Iax progenitors important, especially because no Type Ia progenitor has been conclusively identified. This discovery shows us one way that you can get a white dwarf explosion."
The team's results will appear tomorrow in the journal Nature.
The weak supernova, dubbed SN 2012Z, was found in the Lick Observatory Supernova Search in January 2012. Fortuitously, Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys also observed the supernova's host galaxy, NGC 1309, in 2005, 2006, and 2010, before the supernova outburst. NGC 1309 resides 110 million light-years away. Curtis McCully, a graduate student at Rutgers and lead author of the team's paper, reprocessed the pre-explosion images to make them sharper and noticed an object at the supernova's position. "I was very surprised to see anything at the supernova's location. We expected that the progenitor system would be too faint to see, like in previous searches for normal Type Ia supernova progenitors. It is exciting when nature surprises us," McCully said.
The likelihood that the object detected was just a chance alignment unrelated to the supernova is less than one percent. After studying the object's colors and computer simulations showing possible type Iax progenitor systems, the team concluded that what they were seeing was most likely the light of a star that had lost its outer hydrogen envelope, revealing its helium core.
"Back in 2009, when we were just starting to understand this class, we predicted that these supernovae were produced by a white dwarf and helium star binary system," said team member Ryan Foley of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, who helped identify Type Iax supernovae as a new class. "There's still a little uncertainty with this Hubble study, but it is essentially validation of our claim."
According to the team, one possible scenario for the oddball star system predicts that a seesaw game ensues between the stars, with each star donating mass to the other. The stars originally weighed about seven and four times that of our Sun, respectively. The more massive seven-solar-mass star evolves quickly, dumping its hydrogen and helium onto its smaller companion. Now slimmed down to just one solar mass, the once-more- massive star is left with a carbon and oxygen core, becoming a white dwarf. The companion star, which began with just four solar masses, is now bulked up and begins to evolve quickly, growing larger and engulfing the white dwarf. The outer layers of this "combined" star are ejected, leaving behind the white dwarf and the two-solar-mass helium core of the companion star. The white dwarf is still siphoning matter from its partner until it becomes unstable and explodes as a mini-supernova, ejecting about half a solar mass of material.
Unlike a normal Type Ia supernova, which destroys its white dwarf, the explosion of a Type Iax is thought to leave behind a battered and bruised white dwarf. Since this dead star comes back to life as it explodes, astronomers have nicknamed it a "zombie star."
The team acknowledges that they can't totally rule out other possibilities for the object's identity, including the possibility that it was simply a single, massive star that exploded as a supernova. To settle those uncertainties and confirm their hypothesis, the team plans to use Hubble again in 2015 to observe the area when the supernova's light has dimmed enough to show any possible zombie star and helium companion.
The astronomers already have seen the aftermath of one Type Iax supernova blast. Hubble images taken of supernova 2008ha in January 2013, more than four years after it exploded, show an object at the supernova's location. The supernova resides in the galaxy UGC 12682, located 69 million light-years away. The object could be either the zombie remnant star or the companion. Based on the object's colors, the team suggests in a separate paper that the star is the companion, weighing more than three solar masses. It is significantly less luminous and redder than the SN 2012Z progenitor system. The findings will be published in the Aug. 11 issue of The Astrophysical Journal.
"SN 2012Z is one of the more powerful Type Iax supernovae and SN 2008ha is one of the weakest of the class, showing that Type Iax systems are very diverse," explained Foley, the SN 2008ha paper's lead author. "And perhaps that diversity is related to how each of these stars explodes. Because these supernovae don't destroy the white dwarf completely, we surmise that some of these explosions eject a little bit and some eject a whole lot."
The astronomers hope their new findings will spur the development of improved models for these white dwarf explosions and a more complete understanding of the relationship between Type Iax and normal Type Ia supernovae and their progenitors.

Alcohol and fatigue
Several hours after that nightcap, the alcohol raises the body’s level of epinephrine, a stress hormone that increases the heart rate and generally stimulates the body, which can result in nighttime awakenings. Indeed, alcohol may account for 10% of cases of persistent insomnia. Alcohol also relaxes throat muscles, and this relaxation can worsen sleep-related breathing problems and contribute to sleep apnea. What’s more, alcohol may increase the need to urinate during the night — just another way in which it can disrupt sleep.
Alcohol’s sedative quality can rob you of energy in another way. Drinking wine, beer, or hard liquor during the day can make you feel drowsy or lethargic. If you didn’t sleep well the night before, even one drink can make you drowsy, especially if you drink during one of your usual low-energy times — for example, midafternoon or late evening.
One beverage that can boost your energy is plain old water. One of the first signs of being short on fluids is a feeling of fatigue and weakness. Approximately 50% to 60% of your body weight is water, and you are constantly losing water through urine, sweat, and breathing. This water needs to be replenished. Consuming a sufficient amount of fluids in beverages and water-filled foods (such as fruits, vegetables, and soup) will help you maintain your energy.
