Le Monde (French pronunciation: [lə mɔ̃d]; English: The World) is a French daily evening newspaper founded by Hubert Beuve-Méry and continuously published in Paris since its first edition on 19 December 1944. It is one of two French newspapers of record along with Le Figaro, and the main publication of La Vie-Le Monde Group. It reports an average circulation of 323,039 copies per issue in 2009, about 40,000 of which are sold abroad. It has been available on the Internet since 19 December 1995, and is often the only French newspaper easily obtainable in non-French-speaking countries. It should not be confused with the monthly publication Le Monde diplomatique, of which Le Monde has 51% ownership, but which is editorially independent.
The paper's journalistic side has a collegial form of organization, in which most journalists are not only tenured, but financial stakeholders in the enterprise as well, and participate in the elections of upper management and senior executives. In the 1990s and 2000s, La Vie-Le Monde Group expanded under editor Jean-Marie Colombani with a number of acquisitions. However, its profitability was not sufficient to cover the large debt loads it took on to fund this expansion, and it has sought new investors in 2010 to keep the company out of bankruptcy. It has been suggested that a condition for a bailout might be the loss of Le Monde's famous control by its own journalists. In June 2010, investors Matthieu Pigasse, Pierre Bergé, and Xavier Niel acquired a controlling stake in the newspaper.
In contrast to other world newspapers such as The New York Times, Le Monde was traditionally focused on offering analysis and opinion, as opposed to being a newspaper of record. Hence, it was considered less important for the paper to cover "all the news that's fit to print" (the motto of The New York Times) than to offer thoughtful interpretation of current events. For instance, on the 10th anniversary of the sinking of the Rainbow Warrior, the newspaper directly implicated François Mitterrand, who was president at the time, in the operation. In recent years, however, the paper has established a greater distinction between fact and opinion.

Nytt angreppssätt minskar cancercellers rörelseförmåga

Många cancerforskare intresserar sig för proteiner i hopp om att hitta ledtrådar till cancerns gåta, men Martin Thelin, doktorand vid Lunds universitet, har visat att även cellens kolhydratstrukturer skulle kunna utnyttjas i framtida cancerbehandlingar.

Angreppssättet går ut på att minska cancercellens rörelseförmåga och spridning genom att hämma ett enzym som förändrar cancercellens kolhydratstrukturer.
- Vi har valt att studera matstrupscancer, men enzymet finns även i stor mängd i andra typer av cancerceller, berättar Martin Thelin.
I cellen byggs en stor del nybildade proteiner om för att sedan skickas ut ur cellen eller upp till cellytan.
Under ombyggnationen hängs långa kolhydratkedjor på vissa proteiner. Ett speciellt enzym gör att några av kedjorna förändras.
När dessa kedjor ändras kallas de för dermatansulfat. Martin Thelin och hans kollegor fann att enzymet var fyra gånger så aktivt i cancervävnad jämfört med i frisk vävnad.
- Om enzymet och dess produkt dermatansulfat saknas, så förändras signaler in till cancercellen så att den inte förflyttar sig lika mycket.
Om man lyckas blockera enzymet och hindra dermatansulfaten från att bildas skulle det kunna påverka cancercellens spridningsförmåga, säger Martin Thelin.

För forskargruppens del är det tydligt vad som är nästa steg: att ta fram ett ämne för att kunna blockera bildningen av dermatansulfat.
- Steg ett är att lyckas få fram strukturen på enzymet. Det borde vi kunna lösa på ett år, sen tar det kanske två år att utveckla en hämmare, en sk inhibator, för blockeringen och sedan om allt går bra, är det dags för flera utvärderande studier, säger Martin Thelin.

Harvard, MIT Announce Free Online Learning Project


CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) — Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have joined forces to offer free online courses in a project aimed at attracting millions of online learners around the world, the universities announced Wednesday.
Beginning this fall, a variety of courses developed by faculty at both institutions will be available online through the new $60 million partnership, known as “edX.”
“Anyone with an Internet connection anywhere in the world can have access,” Harvard President Drew Faust said during a news conference to announce the initiative.
MIT has offered a program called OpenCourseWare for a decade that makes materials from more than 2,000 classes available free online. It has been used by more than 100 million people. In December, the school announced it also would begin offering a special credential, known as MITx, for people who complete the online version of certain courses.
Harvard has long offered courses to a wider community through its extension program.
The MITx platform will serve as the foundation for the new learning system.
MIT President Susan Hockfield said more than 120,000 people registered for the first course offered by MITx. She said Harvard and MIT hope other universities will join them in offering courses on the open-source edX platform.
“Fasten your seatbelts,” Hockfield said.
Other universities, including Stanford, Yale and Carnegie-Mellon, have been experimenting with teaching to a global audience online.
The Harvard-MIT initiative will be overseen by a not-for-profit organization based in Cambridge, to be owned equally by the two universities. MIT and Harvard have made commitments of $30 million each in institutional support, grants and philanthropy to start the collaboration.
Certificates will be given to students who pass the online courses.
Harvard and MIT also plan to use the edX platform to research how students learn and which teaching methods and tools are most successful.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said today that the Academy Awards will remain in Hollywood at the Hollywood & Highland complex under a new 20-year deal. Meanwhile, Dolby Laboratories announced an agreement to rename the former Kodak Theatre at the complex the Dolby Theatre. The announcements come after months of speculation that the Oscars might relocate to L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles, and after Kodak filed for bankruptcy and dropped its name from the theater.

An extraordinary outburst produced by a black hole in a nearby galaxy has provided direct evidence for a population of old, volatile stellar black holes. The discovery, made by astronomers using data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, provides new insight into the nature of a mysterious class of black holes that can produce as much energy in X-rays as a million suns radiate at all wavelengths.
Researchers used Chandra to discover a new ultraluminous X-ray source, or ULX. These objects give off more X-rays than most binary systems, in which a companion star orbits the remains of a collapsed star. These collapsed stars form either a dense core called a neutron star or a black hole. The extra X-ray emission suggests ULXs contain black holes that might be much more massive than the ones found elsewhere in our galaxy.
A paper describing these results will appear in the May 10, 2012, issue of The Astrophysical Journal.

Fylla och bråk som vanligt. I "Sjung om studenternas..." Uppsala blev 50 omhändertagna av polisen i går kväll. Fyllesvinens Valborgsmässoafton är en skamafton för vårt lands välkomnande av våren. Glamouriseringen här uppe i norr av spritflaskan är mycket barnsligt; ljuspunkten är att alltfler unga tar avstånd från detta (de är de verkligt tuffa) , medan många av de äldre är förlorade och förbinder spritflaskan med lycka och tuffhet. När de här yngre tänkande personerna tar över från de barnsliga yngre  fyllesvinskandidaterna kan Valborgsmässoafton bli ett fint välkomnande av våren.
