COPENHAGEN, Denmark—Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano today traveled to Copenhagen, Denmark to join Attorney General Eric Holder and her European counterparts for the biannual U.S.-European Union (EU) Justice and Home Affairs Ministerial to discuss U.S.-EU efforts related to border management, countering violent extremism, law enforcement cooperation, global supply chain security, aviation security and cybersecurity.
During the Ministerial meetings, Secretary Napolitano joined EU Vice President and Commissioner for Justice, Fundamental Rights and Citizenship Viviane Reding; EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Cecilia Malmström; Cyprus Minister of Justice and Public Order Loucas Louca; and Danish Minister of Justice Morten Bødskov to discuss the Department’s cooperation to expand information sharing and improve our ability to identify and address threats.
DHS and the EU have recently announced three international agreements to protect the global supply chain while facilitating legitimate trade and travel, including the recently ratified Passenger Name Record (PNR) agreement between the United States and the European Union; the Mutual Recognition Decision between U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism program and the EU’s Authorized Economic Operator program; and the air cargo security partnership between the Transportation Security Administration and the EU to mutually recognize their respective air cargo security regimes.
Secretary Napolitano also discussed U.S-EU collaboration on cybersecurity. The U.S. and EU participate in a standing U.S.-EU Working Group on Cybersecurity and Cybercrime that focuses on enhancing public-private partnerships, raising awareness about cyber threats, combating cybercrime, and protecting critical infrastructure and intellectual property.
Secretary Napolitano will travel to Paris and Brussels on June 22-23 to meet with her counterparts and discuss the Department’s collaboration with international partners on information sharing, cybersecurity, and facilitating legitimate trade and travel.
