Hidden Portals in Earth's Magnetic Field

June 29, 2012: A favorite theme of science fiction is "the portal"--an extraordinary opening in space or time that connects travelers to distant realms. A good portal is a shortcut, a guide, a door into the unknown. If only they actually existed....

It turns out that they do, sort of, and a NASA-funded researcher at the University of Iowa has figured out how to find them.

"We call them X-points or electron diffusion regions," explains plasma physicist Jack Scudder of the University of Iowa. "They're places where the magnetic field of Earth connects to the magnetic field of the Sun, creating an uninterrupted path leading from our own planet to the sun's atmosphere 93 million miles away."

Observations by NASA's THEMIS spacecraft and Europe's Cluster probes suggest that these magnetic portals open and close dozens of times each day. They're typically located a few tens of thousands of kilometers from Earth where the geomagnetic field meets the onrushing solar wind. Most portals are small and short-lived; others are yawning, vast, and sustained. Tons of energetic particles can flow through the openings, heating Earth's upper atmosphere, sparking geomagnetic storms, and igniting bright polar auroras.

NASA is planning a mission called "MMS," short for Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission, due to launch in 2014, to study the phenomenon. Bristling with energetic particle detectors and magnetic sensors, the four spacecraft of MMS will spread out in Earth's magnetosphere and surround the portals to observe how they work.

Just one problem: Finding them. Magnetic portals are invisible, unstable, and elusive. They open and close without warning "and there are no signposts to guide us in," notes Scudder.

Data from NASA's Polar spacecraft, circa 1998, provided crucial clues to finding magnetic X-points.

Actually, there are signposts, and Scudder has found them.

Portals form via the process of magnetic reconnection. Mingling lines of magnetic force from the sun and Earth criss-cross and join to create the openings. "X-points" are where the criss-cross takes place. The sudden joining of magnetic fields can propel jets of charged particles from the X-point, creating an "electron diffusion region."

To learn how to pinpoint these events, Scudder looked at data from a space probe that orbited Earth more than 10 years ago.

"In the late 1990s, NASA's Polar spacecraft spent years in Earth's magnetosphere," explains Scudder, "and it encountered many X-points during its mission."

Because Polar carried sensors similar to those of MMS, Scudder decided to see how an X-point looked to Polar. "Using Polar data, we have found five simple combinations of magnetic field and energetic particle measurements that tell us when we've come across an X-point or an electron diffusion region. A single spacecraft, properly instrumented, can make these measurements."

This means that single member of the MMS constellation using the diagnostics can find a portal and alert other members of the constellation. Mission planners long thought that MMS might have to spend a year or so learning to find portals before it could study them. Scudder's work short cuts the process, allowing MMS to get to work without delay.

It's a shortcut worthy of the best portals of fiction, only this time the portals are real. And with the new "signposts" we know how to find them.

ISS Command Changes Hands

The reins of the International Space Station were passed from Expedition 31 Commander Oleg Kononenko to cosmonaut Gennady Padalka during a ceremony on the orbital outpost on June 29, 2012. Kononenko and Flight Engineers Don Pettit of NASA and Andre Kuipers of the European Space Agency arrived at the station on December 23, 2011, and will make a parachute-assisted landing on the steppe of Kazakhstan on July 1, 2012 in their Soyuz TMA-03M spacecraft. Padalka, who is the first three-time commander of the station, NASA Flight Engineer Joe Acaba and Russian Flight Engineer Sergei Revin will be joined on July 17 by oncoming Expedition 32/33 crew members Yuri Malenchenko, Flight Engineer Suni Williams of NASA and Aki Hoshide of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency.

Özil scored Germany's sole goal in the match.                                    Germany's national team has done its home country proud throughout the UEFA Euro 2012 soccer championships, despite a disappointing 1-2 defeat in a June 28 semi-final match against Italy in Warsaw. Now Italy will advance to the final to play Spain on July 1 in Kiev. (On this day most citizens of both countries, as well as most other Europeans, will be otherwise indisposed as they watch the game live at home, in bars or cafes, or at public outdoor jumbotron screenings.) Many of the names of players on the German national team sound, well, quite "German", such as Manuel Neuer (goal); Philipp Lahm, Holger Badstuber and Per Mertesacker (defense); and Lars Bender, Thomas Müller and Bastian Schweinsteiger (midfield). Others sound more "exotic", such as Jerome Boateng (defense); Ilkay Gündogan, Sami Khedira, Mesut Özil and Lukas Podolski (midfield); and Mario Gomez and Miroslav Klose (offense). Khedira is of Tunisian-German origin and Özil is a third-generation Turkish-German. Boateng is of Ghanaian-German origin; Podolski and Klose were both born in Poland; Gomez is of Spanish-German origin; and Gündogan also has German-Turkish roots. The 23 players now on the national squad are thus a multicultural microcosm of modern Germany. Recent media reports have in particular highlighted the friendship between Sami Khedira and Mesut Özil, who scored Germany's only goal in the Euro semi-final match against Italy. When not on the German national squad, both have pretty impressive "day jobs" playing for Real Madrid. Spiegel Online in a profile of Özil published on June 27 described him as the shy, yet preternaturally talented, "kid brother" to a super-cool Khedira: "Özil and Khedira are inseperable. They have the same center-parted haircut, and their dark tresses are held back during games by the same kind of headband. Khedira usually walks in front. For a stroll along the beach at the resort town of Zoppot on a recent afternoon off, Khedira wore a baseball cap, sunglasses and fashionably ripped jeans, looking like a rapper who'd brought his kid brother along. His kid brother was the international star." They may have lost against Italy yesterday, but there are still plenty of great things in store for Özil and most of the relatively young German national squad. Their goal is to play great football. In the process of striving towards soccer superstardom, they also just happen to serve as global ambassadors for today's Germany, including a progressive and democratic society and citizenry with cultural and ethnic roots all over the world. Sie wissen, wie man die Italiener in einem Halbfinale besiegt! Mesut Özil, Sami Khedira, Jerome Boateng, Benedikt Höwedes, Mats Hummels, Manuel Neuer und Marcel Schmelzer waren bei der U21-Nationalmannschaft 2009 dabei, als zunächst die Squadra Azzurra im Halbfinale mit 1:0 besiegt wurde, und dann der EM-Titel gelang.

Trainer war damals Horst Hrubesch, der schon 1980 den EM-Pott in die Höhe stemmen konnte. „Für mich ist das keine große Überraschung, dass die Jungens jetzt auftrumpfen. Boateng, Özil oder auch Khedira haben sich damals nicht vor der Verantwortung gescheut. Diesen Charakterzug haben sie beibehalten.“

Nioåringen drog fram sitt vapen, ropade "den är skarpladdad" och så stal han en kommunal elbil. I 30-35 kilometer i timmen-fortare gick inte elbilen-försökte han fly förföljd av ytterligare en elbil samt personer som sett vad som hänt.
I en rondell i Kortedala i Göteborg krockade pojken, uppger aftonbladet.se. Han fortsatte till fots men greps snabbt. De vuxna var snabbare.
