Stellar Canvas

Featured onMay 6, 2011
Billowing clouds of gas and dust paint a colorful scene in this view of the Lagoon Nebula, M8, obtained with the Gemini South telescope. Small 'pillars' of material contain newborn stars. The remaining gas around them is being eroded by the radiation from hot, massive stars in the nebula, which is about 5,000 light-years away in the constellation Sagittarius. [I.Arias, Rodolfo H.
