Libya has been under the control of an authoritarian leader, Muammar al-Gaddafi, since 1969. In 1992, United Nations imposed sanctions on Libya for fostering terrorism. As Reuters reports, the international isolation of Libya came to an end in 2003 after it agreed to abandon its weapon's programs. In 2009, al-Gaddafi became the longest serving of all current non-royal national leaders, and he is one of the longest serving rulers in history.
