This Week on Grammar Girl

"Rogue" Versus "Rouge": I always struggled to spell "rogue" and "rouge" until Sarah Palin adopted the catch phrase "going rogue." Here's how her slogan finally helped me remember.
The Royal "We": In honor of the new royal baby, more formally known as Prince George Alexander Louis, we're pondering a pompous pronoun choice known as the "royal we."
Is "Chai Tea" Redundant: Chai means "tea" in Hindi, so when we order "chai tea," we're asking for "tea tea." Should we expect marketers not to be redundant when they name products
Poem: Guess the Literary Device: Denise Cevela brings personification to life. "TREES stand guarding through the night, Soldiers, never taking flight..." Read more.

Around the Web

Newslinx

The Wave

The Wave is a sandstone rock formation located in the United States of America near the Arizona and Utah border on the slopes of the Coyote Buttes, in the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness, on the Colorado Plateau. It is famous among hikers and photographers for its colorful, undulating forms, and the rugged, trackless hike required to reach it

Was the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki justified?

http://www.debate.org/opinions/was-the-bombing-of-hiroshima-and-nagasaki-justified

"Even though the cost was terrible, the atomic bombs used against both Hiroshima and Nagasaki were justified. The U.S. Army was preparing to invade the mainland of Japan, and this would have certainly created a situation with far more casualties than the use of the nuclear weapons. Consider also that the Soviet Union had just launched a massive attack against Japan at roughly the same time as the use of the atomic weapons. The Soviet Union could have taken Japan, which would have been extraordinarily bloody."

"First of all, they were on the losing side anyways, they would have surrendered before it. Second, we didn't have to drop it on Japan itself, we could've dropped it near the harbor and scared them into surrendering once they saw the true power of the bomb. Third, if we had just modified the Potsdam Proclamation(A proclamation that demanded that the Japanese surrendered unconditionally without any say) so that they could've agreed to something. Fourth, many Japanese were killed, yes, if we hadn't dropped it than both sides would have had casualties, but the area they bombed had six civilians for every soldier. More civilians were killed than soldiers in both of those bombings. Fifth, people around the area today still have radiation poisoning and cancer and many other illnesses because of the bomb. I really don't see why we had to drop it there if anywhere. The bomb should not have been dropped."

Tokmaraton

Light Show

The heat wave that has gripped Germany for the past two weeks abated slightly this weekend when large parts of the country were rocked by severe thunderstorms. On Saturday night and early Sunday morning, the weather conditions made for a striking night sky over the city of Görlitz in the eastern state of Saxony. More severe thunder storms are expected in Germany on Monday and Tuesday/Der Spiegel

Men problemet blir isf hur  tillvaron i Allsvenskan blir.

State Department extends closure of embassies, consulates‏

The U.S. State Department has extended its closure of some embassies and consulates in the Middle East until Saturday. A press release on the department's website said the closures were out of an "abundance of caution" and not an "indication of a new threat." USATODAY

Sundsvallsbron

The Aging Eye

Keep the future bright! Learn how to protect your sight as you grow older!

Preventing and treating eye disease

Sight is a precious gift. But it can be snatched away by a variety of assaults. If you are age 50 or older, I hope you will order this report from Harvard Medical School.
The Aging Eye is written specifically for adults over 50. If you are one, your risk of developing one of four disorders that pose a threat to vision — cataract, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy — increases as you grow older.
Age is the main risk factor for these diseases. For example, half of all people between the ages of 65 and 74 have cataracts; after age 75, about 70% do. And glaucoma is most common in people over 60.
When it comes to your vision, as you grow older you've got to grow wiser too.

The Aging Eye

That means knowing the steps you can take to prevent these vision problems. You also need to know the warning signs of vision problems, how they are diagnosed, and the best treatment options.
The Aging Eye will help you determine your risk of developing these disorders. It will describe the symptoms, update you on advances in diagnostic testing, and share news about advances in surgery and breakthroughs in the development of disease-arresting medications.

You'll learn what a cataract is (it's not a film on the eye), why the "air-puff" test for glaucoma is sometimes wrong (and which test is much more accurate), how your diet and lifestyle can decrease your risk of macular degeneration, and much more.

Plus, the report will show you ways to relieve dry eye syndrome. You'll see how a procedure called conductive keratoplasty compares to LASIK to correct vision. You'll find out what causes "floaters" and "flashes." And you'll be alerted to those symptoms that signal a sight-imperiling emergency that demands immediate treatment.

Our eyes change as we get older. That's a truth we can do little about. It's the consequences we can change. Order your copy of The Aging Eye today!

To your good health,

Amateur Radio TV transmitter launched to ISS

On Saturday, August 3 at 1948 UT, the Japanese HTV-4 cargo vessel was successfully launched to the International Space Station (ISS).
On-board was the  Amateur Radio (Ham) TV transmitter and a number of CubeSats carrying amateur radio payloads.

The Japanese space agency JAXA has announced details of four CubeSats on the launch. They will be deployed from the ISS by the JEM Small Satellite Orbital Deployer (J-SSOD) between October 2013 and March 2014.

The four CubeSats are:
• PicoDragon a 1U CubeSat developed by Vietnam National Satellite Center(VNSC), University of Tokyo, IHI aerospace. CW beacon on 437.250 MHz and 1k2 AFSK AX.25 telemetry on 437.365 MHz
• ArduSat-1 and ArduSat-X 1U CubeSats developed by Nanorack, NanoSatisfi. ArduSat-1 437.325 MHz 9k6 MSK CCSDS downlink. ArduSat-X 437.345MHz 9k6 MSK CCSDS downlink.
• TechEdSat-3 a 3U CubeSat developed by NASA Ames Research Center

The main mission of HamTV is to perform contacts between the astronauts on the ISS and school students, not only by voice, but also by unidirectional video from the ISS to the ground within the ARISS program.

The ESA Columbus module on the ISS will host the 2.4 GHz video transmitting station in addition to the existing 144 MHz FM amateur radio station. This new equipment can broadcast images from the ISS during the school contacts or other pre-recorded video images up to 24 hours a day to allow ground stations tuning.

It is planned to transmit DVB-S signals on 2.4 GHz at either 1.3Msps or 2.3Msps with 10 watts of RF.

One step closer to inexpensive, durable electronics, solar cells

Researchers at University of Minnesota's College of Science and Engineering and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colo., have overcome technical hurdles in the quest for inexpensive, durable electronics and solar cells made with non-toxic chemicals. This advance brings us one step closer to the reality of producing electronic touch pads that cost just a few dollars and solar cells that cost the same as roof shingles.

Fettintaget

Trendbrott.
