Idrotten har spårat ur totalt
Mer än 600 uppgjorda fotbollsmatcher, bland annat i Champions League och VM-kval. Över 400 domare och spelare inblandade. Det är delar i den gigantiska spelskandal som nu avslöjats av europeisk polis.
Det har blivit värre och värre, nu kan sägas att Mammon har totalt vandaliserat idrotten. Något tråkigare kan man knappt tänka sig.

Felleng formed as a tropical storm over the southern Indian Ocean on January 26, 2013, and strengthened into a cyclone on January 29. That day, the U.S. Navy’s Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) reported that Felleng was located roughly 420 nautical miles (780 kilometers) north of Réunion Island. The storm had maximum sustained winds of 90 knots (170 kilometers per hour), with gusts up to 110 knots (205 kilometers per hour). Over the next 36 hours, wind speeds were forecast to increase to 115 knots (215 kilometers per hour) with gusts up to 140 knots (260 kilometers per hour).

The JTWC projected storm track showed Felleng moving southward over the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar and west of Réunion, then veering slightly toward the southeast. Although the center of the storm was expected to remain off Madagascar’s coast, storm clouds could easily extend over the eastern reaches of the island.

Imorgon och onsdag träffas miljöministrarna från de arktiska länderna i Jukkasjärvi under ledning av vår egen miljöminister Lena Ek. Detta är första gången samtliga arktiska miljöministrar samlas för ett gemensamt möte och ett unikt tillfälle att påverka Arktis framtid.
Skicka ett meddelande till Lena Ek och uppmana henne att göra allt för att skydda Arktis unika miljö. Ju fler som mejlar Lena Ek desto starkare blir hennes mandat att agera.
Hittills har Arktiska rådet producerat mycket ord, men väldigt lite konkret för att skydda den sårbara arktiska miljön. Som du säkert redan känner till är hoten mot Arktis många, klimatförändringarna gör att isarna smälter och oljeexploateringen kan starta redan i år om inget görs.
Idag läckte dessutom Arktiska rådets beredskapsplan för oljeutsläpp i Arktis ut, dyster läsning som visar på total nonchalans för de stora riskerna förknippade med oljeutvinning i detta känsliga område.
Men när miljöministrarna nu samlas har de chansen att skicka en tydlig signal till sina utrikesministerkollegor som träffas i Kiruna i maj. Efter det mötet lämnar Sverige och Carl Bildt ifrån sig ordförandeklubban i Arktiska rådet och våra chanser att påverka minskar.
Skyddas inte Arktis nu kan det snart vara för sent, men tillsammans kan vi uppmana politikerna att gå från ord till handling.
Dags för politikerna att sluta snacka och gör konkreta åtaganden för att skydda Arktis!

Eight killed, more than 30 hurt as bus flips
At least eight people were killed Sunday night and more than 30 injured when a tour bus crashed on a narrow mountain road near Yucaipa, authorities said.
The collision, which involved the bus, a truck and a sedan, occurred about 6:30 p.m. on California 38 on a route leading from the Big Bear area, authorities said.
Some people were ejected from the bus; others were trapped inside. Because of the severity of the carnage, it was difficult for rescue workers to immediately identify exactly how many people were killed. / L A Times

Rekordlång match i Davis Cup
På lördagen spelades den hittills längsta matchen i tennisturneringen Davis Cups historia. Dubbelmatchen mellan det schweiziska paret Stanislas Wawrinka och Marco Chiudinelli och Tjeckiens Tomas Berdych och Lukas Rosol varade i sju timmar och två minuter. The Role of Biking and Hiking in Mathematics
In my last post, I discussed less-obvious role of mathematics in answering simple questions about biking. What about the role of biking (or hiking) in answering difficult questions about mathematics?
Many people who run, hike or bike long distances have noticed that these activities makes them feel more alert and more productive mentally, both while exercising and in the hours following. I've experienced this consistently myself, and fellow mathematicians I've mentioned this to have often shared similar observations.
Patricia Verrier at the University of Portsmouth in England, whose research is in non-linear dynamics and planetary dynamics, concurs: "I definitely agree that it's endurance sports that help with creative/mathematical thinking. Walking/hiking, and rowing if it's a long distance/low intensity (and someone else is steering!)."
"I've had many of what I think of as 'aha' breakthrough moments while exercising, although it's more minor things such as my own understanding of a problem, an idea for a new approach to solve something or how to sort out a coding problem."
Some mathematicians even attribute notable creative developments in their professional lives to time spent essentially alone out in nature.
Ken Ono (shown below) is a top class mathematician at Emory University, in Atlanta, Georgia, focusing on research in number theory, who is also an avid off-road triathlete. He first got into cycling while in junior high school Baltimore in the 1980s, even racing with the Pepsi-Miyata team in 1989 as a student at the University of Chicago. He relishes time spent away from it all, trailing a mathematical conundrum to its lair.
"To think deeply I need to eliminate distractions... the emails, phone calls, texts. I am free to imagine crazy ideas while floating on trails on my mountain bike," the high-energy mathematician reveals. "I am most productive when I disappear for hours in the woods." His conviction that research and exercise are inextricably linked has already been documented.
Ono goes even further today, linking a challenging physical feat last October with a significant "aha" moment of his own, in his continued research on the deep, intractable problems posed in the fabled final letter of Patricia Verrier's, the extraordinary Indian "mystic mathematician" whose 125th birthday was recently celebrated worldwide (and trumpeted with a Google Doodle) .
"I made the key breakthrough on my recent work on the mock theta functions on Quehl Holler, a 775 foot drop at the Blankets Creek Mountain Bike Park in Woodstock, Georgia," Ono reveals. "Something about the concentration required to navigate the boulders seemed to click, and I then realized the subtle point that I'd been missing for years." The resulting mathematics was the subject of a popular Huffington Post piece at the end of 2012.
Ono spoke of the exciting new results---collaborations with some of his PhD students and postdocs---both at the Ramanujan 125th meetings in India in December and at the big Joint Mathematics Meeting in San Diego in January, the later in a slot previously slated for a more technical talk. "Abstracts for the JMM were submitted before we had the proofs, and so I decided to submit a safe abstract, stuff that we had already written up," acknowledges Ono. "I wanted to do something special for the Ramanujan conferences, and so we went to work on trying to finish off the last letter. Fortunately we were able to do this."
"In his last letter to Hardy, Ramanujan listed examples of his so-called mock theta functions, but admits that he could not prove that his examples satisfy his vague definition. I figured out how to do this on that bike ride. The realization was that his statement could be tested using the regularized inner product. I missed that point for the last five years."
This isn't the first time that the great outdoors has played a role in inspiring Ken and collaborators. In the fall of 2010, he was wrestling with Ramanujan's partition problem: how to find a formula for the number of ways P(n) to write a positive whole number n as a sum of other such numbers. For instance P(4) = 5 because of the five representations 4 = 3 + 1 = 2 + 2 = 2 + 1 + 1 = 1 + 1 + 1 + 1, whereas P(26) can be checked (with a lot of time and effort) to be 1958.
I emailed Ken Ono at the last minute to ask what P(2013) is, and his speedy response was 6,805,659,785,780,163,657,391,920,602,286,596,663,406,217,911. That's about 7 quattuordecillion, i.e., 7 x 1045 which is quite large. (The number of atoms on earth is about 1050 according to Wolfram Alpha).
All told, mathematics and hard exercise has been a win-win combination for Ono, who adds, " I do my best writing at home. I do my best conjuring in the woods."
On Ono's recent trip to India, he brought along his new PhD student Robert Schneider, who is making the transition from a long-standing career in indie rock band Apples in stereo (as mentioned at the end here) to graduate level mathematics. Schneider is also a devotee of Ramanujan, and finds inspiration comes at unexpected times.
Others in the mathematical field find long periods of exercise productive in a different way. One such is prolific author and speaker, Huffington Post blogger and MAA columnist Keith Devlin, Executive Director of the H-STAR Institute at Stanford University (aka NPR's Math Guy).

My work on partitions with Zach Kent was kind of inspired by nature. We were hiking at Tallulah Falls in north Georgia, simply trying to formulate a way of describing complicated structure...like leaves on trees in really dense forest...and we realized that opening our minds without relying on existing structure made it possible for us to understand the partition numbers much more clearly.
All told, mathematics and hard exercise has been a win-win combination for Ono, who adds, " I do my best writing at home. I do my best conjuring in the woods."

I often come up with theorems in dreams, or while swimming or walking," says Schneider. "I once thought of a heuristic proof of the Prime Number Theorem on a walk, when I saw spring flowers falling froma tree. Recently, I realized a way to write the partition function while swimming with my son. Often, I fall asleep thinking about mathematics, and I have abstract dreams all night, manipulating shapes and colors as formulas similar to synaesthesia. I wake up with a new idea or theorem, often things I would never have thought of otherwise. I think my best songs come to me in much the same way, by surprise, driving my car or in dreams.

The ideas I have during my long weekend rides, typically of two to five hours, are exclusively of the exposition/writing/planning talks/grant proposals kind, including actual sentences I will use. It is always about material that has been actively churning around in my mind prior to the ride. My attention can be so focused that I can ride for hours and afterwards not have conscious memory of the ride itself.
I don't think I have ever solved a mathematical problem on a ride. True, at my age, I don't work on mathematics problems as much as in my younger days, and when I do I don't fire ideas at the same rate. But when I was younger I used to run long distances (ten miles every day and twenty miles or more at weekends), and the same was true then. But I did get good problem-solving idea shortly after a run and these days the same is true after a ride. So the exercise does seem relevant in both cases.
It's easy to come up with plausible pop psychological explanations of what's going on in the two cases, involving the release of natural opiates in the brain, but I'll leave that to others.

Post-Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Study

| In the Gulf of Mexico, natural gas including methane, ethane, propane and butane that was collected with a containment cap on the sea floor is flared at the surface by the drillship Discoverer Enterprise. The amount of gas being flared represents about 15 percent of the gas emitted into the deep ocean by the Deepwater Horizon spill and trapped there. This work was done by a team of researchers, led by David Valentine of the University of California, Santa Barbara, and John Kessler of Texas A&M university, that embarked on a research cruise with the mission of determining the fate and impact of hydrocarbon gases that were escaping from the deep-water oil spill. The disaster provided a rare opportunity to study the behavior of methane and other natural gases in deep water. Experiments by the team were conducted as close as 1,500 feet from the epicenter of the active spill. Underwater sampling devices and sensors were used to measure hydrocarbons and oxygen depletion at various depths, and to collect water samples to study the biodegradation of natural gas and the associated blooms of bacteria. The research was funded by the National Science Foundation (grants OCE 10-42097, OCE 09-61725 and OCE 10-42650) and the Department of Energy. The 200th Anniversary Year of Richard Wagner
On May 22, 2013, the celebrations of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Richard Wagner will reach their climax at the Festspielhaus in Bayreuth when Christian Thielemann, one of the world’s leading interpreters of Wagner, conducts the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra’s special concert of selections from Die Walküre, Rienzi, Götterdämmerung, and Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, performed by outstanding soloists. Following the concert, Wagner pilgrims from around the world will gather in the center of Bayreuth—the “Wagnerstadt,” or City of Wagner—for a celebration of the great composer.
The concert on Wagner’s actual birthday represents the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the Wagner Anniversary Year 2013, which will see a vast array of concerts, performances, exhibitions, seminars, and more, devoted to Wagner throughout Germany. /Germany Info

Annual International Science & Technology Visualization Challenge AnnouncedWinners of 10th

The National Science Foundation (NSF), along with the journal Science, today announces the 53 winners and honorable mentions of the International Science & Technology Visualization Challenge, a highly competitive contest jointly sponsored by NSF and Science. Science magazine is published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
This latest competition received more than 200 entries from 18 countries, including entries from 19 U.S. states and Canadian territories. The Feb. 1, 2013, issue of Science features the winning submissions, which are also accessible to the public at NSF's website.
"It's the 10th year of this challenge, and each year, partnering with Science magazine, we receive beautiful and compelling visualizations that enhance public understanding of science," said Judith Gan, NSF's director of Legislative and Public Affairs. "Researchers are generating more information than ever before, and visualization techniques are evolving to meet the challenge of conveying this information in comprehensible ways, as well. This year's many outstanding contributions are evidence of this continuing adaptation necessary to illuminate increasingly complex information."
"This year's winning entries are a spectacular collection. Each one exposes a hidden facet of the natural world, or puts scientific concepts in a new light. And they use cutting-edge techniques to draw the viewer in," said Colin Norman, Science magazine's news editor. "That's exactly what we were hoping for when we joined with NSF a decade ago to launch the science and engineering visualization challenge."
Winning entries feature owls that can perform 270-degree neck rotations, biomineral crystals found in a sea urchin's tooth, a realistic video simulation of a human heart, a flash game about Special Relativity and other compelling visualizations.
A committee of staff members from Science and NSF screened the entries and sent finalists to an outside panel of experts in scientific visualization to select the winners. In addition, as was the case for the first time last year, the public participated in the voting process, selecting their favorite images as People's Choice awardees. The challenge received more than 3,150 public votes.
The winning entries are featured by category at the links below in NSF's International Science & Engineering Visualization Challenge Special Report, where several winners are featured in a video produced by NSF.

Den som fotbollsspelare avdankade David Beckham presenterades igår på en presskonferens av sin nya klubb Paris SG, och det dröjde inte länge innan någon frågade om Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Han är större än jag sade bl.a. Beckham, något som vi sannerligen inte kunnat undvika genom stora rubriker i svensk press. Kanske hade man förväntat sig att Beckham skulle ha säga om sin nye klubbkamrat att han som fotbollsspelare är en medelmåtta?
Hur som helst, visst är Zlatan en stor fotbollsspelare och det är bara att gratta Beckham för att han nu fått möjligheten att få sitta på parkettplats, alltså reservbänken när Zlatan spelar. Att Beckham inte får sitta på Barcelonas parkettplats och se världens bästa spelare som t.ex. Messi och Iniesta kan kanske sägas kompenseras av den ekonomiska ersättningen för PR-uppgiften och lättvindigt nu få ledsaga sin fru vid besök på modehus som är större än till och med de i Barcelona.
