World leaders stood in solidarity on Friday as they marked the 70th anniversary of the Normandy landings (D-Day) on the western coast of France - the largest seaborne invasion in history and a turning point in the Second World War. Both German Chancellor Angela Merkel and US President Barack Obama were among the attendees at the ceremony. This is only the second time a German leader participated in the commemoration in Normandy, which makes it all the more significant.
