Tuesday marked the beginning of Ramadan in France. Or did it? This year's month of fasting started with confusion for the country's Muslims after France's top Islamic authority and officials at the Grand Mosque of Paris could not initially agree on whether Ramadan began on Tuesday or, as in the Arab world, on Wednesday. The two sides ultimately agreed that the festival would start on Wednesday, but not after many of the country's faithful had already begun fasting.
