BASTAD, Sweden, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- A staff member at a Swedish nursing home has been suspended for allegedly hitting a dementia patient on the head with a broom, city officials said.

The nursing assistant allegedly grabbed a broom from a closet and used it to shove the patient's wheelchair and then pummel the victim.

"I've worked in this business for many years, but I've never heard of anything like this," Susanne Hertting, head of the healthcare system in the city of Bastad, told the Helsingborgs Dagblad.

The motive for the alleged attack was not known; however, The Local said Sunday the nursing home has come under the scrutiny of inspectors in the past for staffing shortages.

"We know that most of our staff do a fantastic job," Hertting said. "No matter how hard work gets, or if you're angry at your boss, you don't go and hit an innocent person."
