A man in a kayak pulls up alongside a giant statue of a woman bathing in Hamburg's Alster Lake. "The Bather" (Die Badende) is the work of German artist Oliver Voss and has caused some controversy among locals. Before the steel-and-styrofoam piece was installed, district mayor Markus Schreiber took a stand against the bathing beauty, telling Germany's Bild newspaper, "The Alster is holy -- you can't just put whatever you want in it." Despite such protests, the lady of the lake was installed on Aug. 1 and will carry on with her summer bathing for ten days before she is fished back out.
