KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — A man wielding a machete and a hammer is holding 30 children and teachers hostage

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — A man wielding a machete and a hammer is holding 30 children and teachers hostage at a kindergarten in Malaysia, police said.

...District police officer Suhaimi Ahmad said the man barged into the kindergarten in southern Johor state early Thursday. He said police have cordoned off the area and are negotiating with the man.

The Star newspaper reported the man told negotiators to give him a gun or he would kill the children.

A local psychiatrist spoke to the man from outside the building and said he had calmed down, The Star reported.

"He is hungry now and wants some food," Dr. Lau Keen Lee said.

The New Straits Times newspaper says at least one child may have died at the Seri Kids kindergarten, but could not confirm the report.

The New Straits Times (09.45 SET):
However, it is too early to confirm any casualties as the police are still in negotiations with the man.
