Congressional leaders are reviewing the final language of an agreement that would avert a federal government shutdown, yielding more spending cuts for Republicans but also a key concession on an issue related to abortion rights, according to congressional aides in both parties.
If all sides sign off on the final package, lawmakers are expected to race against the midnight deadline to approve a very brief extension of government funding through the weekend and into next week.

Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill have reached an agreement to fund the federal government for the next five months, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's office announced Friday night. The deal will include $39 billion in spending cuts and will drop language related to Planned Parenthood. Lawmakers were still working to approve a short-term stopgap funding bill before midnight to give them time to craft the longer-term legislation.

The House and Senate both approved a stopgap spending bill that will continue federal funding for the next six days, averting a government shutdown. The chambers acted swiftly on the continuing resolution after agreeing late Friday night to a budget plan for the next five months. Lawmakers are scheduled to vote on that measure next week.

---Speaking from the White House after the Republican meeting, President Obama said that both sides had to give ground in reaching the bargain and that some of the cuts that Democrats accepted “will be painful.”
“Programs people rely on will be cut back,” said Mr. Obama, who said Americans had to begin to live within their means. “Needed infrastructure projects will be delayed.”
In the closed door Republican session, according to people present in the room, Mr. Boehner described the plan as the best deal he could wring from Democrats and said the cuts — an estimate $39 billion in reductions — represented the “largest real dollar spending cut in American history.”
Although both sides compromised, Republicans were able to force significant spending concessions from Democrats in exchange from putting to rest some of the vexing social policy fights that had held up the agreement.---.

WASHINGTON - In President Obama's short remarks on Friday night about the deal made to avoid a government shutdown, he made reference to a mother in Longmont Colorado.
He said her appeal to him and Congress spoke to the heart of the issue.
"A few days ago I received a letter from a mother in Longmont, Colorado. Over the year, her son's eighth grade class saved up money and worked on projects so that next week they could take a class trip to Washington, D.C. They even have an appointment to lay a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The mother wrote that for the last few days, the kids in her son's class have been worried and upset that they might have to cancel their trip because of a shutdown. She asked those of us in Washington to get past our petty grievances and make things right. And she said, 'Remember the future of this country is not for us, it's for our children,'" Obama said.
He went on to say that now the class would be able to visit the places they wanted in Washington, D.C.
Late Friday night, 9NEWS heard from the woman who says she was the one who wrote that letter. We are talking to her tonight and we'll have more with her on Saturday.
