Egypt's governing military council has accepted the resignation of Ahmed Shafiq, the prime minister

Egypt's governing military council has accepted the resignation of Ahmed Shafiq, the prime minister, and appointed a former transport minister, Essam Sharaf, to form a new government, according to an army statement.

The statement was carried on the military's Facebook page on Thursday and then confirmed by a military spokesman.
Shafiq had been picked to head the cabinet by Hosni Mubarak before the Egyptian president was brought down in February by a popular uprising.
Al Jazeera's Ayman Mohyeldin, reporting from Cairo, said the supreme military council had responded to one of the main demands of the protesters by accepting Shafiq's resignation.
Shafiq was seen by many as someone who was too close to Mubarak, and who had demonstrated a patronising attitude to the revolution, he said.
At the same time, opinion was divided among the foot soldiers of the revolution as to whether suitable candidates could be found who had not served at some point in their career in the cabinet under Mubarak, he said.
