Egypt's military council backs Mubarak, Sept. elections

Egypt's military chiefs said Friday that they would back President Hosni Mubarak's decision to remain in office as part of a gradual transfer of power.
The armed forces leadership also said it would guarantee "free and honest" elections, and a lifting of Egypt's 30-year-old state of emergency as soon as calm returned to the streets.
The military's announcement came as determined masses of demonstrators packed central Cairo, with organizers of Egypt's popular rebellion predicting the biggest turnout so far in their 18-day revolt.
