For the second year in a row and sixth year overall, Forbes magazine has named Chancellor Angela Merkel the world’s no. 1 most powerful woman, noting her leadership role in dealing with the euro zone debt crisis and commitment to keeping the euro zone intact. The magazine also cited her push for a continuing international climate change prevention agreement. Merkel has been Chancellor since 2005 and in that time has been named the most powerful woman in the world by Forbes a total of six times. Forbes has been compiling the list for nine years.
Chancellor Merkel is followed on the list by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Merkel is one of eight heads of government or state on the list, which also includes Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner and Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard. Also on the list is IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde.
